I know I've heard people talk about these guys on here before, but I was wondering what their shows are like? I have a chance to go see them close to hear and more than likely will, just wanted to see what I had in store before hand... Railroad Earth is with them... |

Yes, yes, yes, go! They are amazing.
I'm looking forward to seeing them in Virginia Beach again in September. |

It's pretty amazing to see them live...I guess bluegrass guys always brag about how fast they can pick, but I think the Hackensaws put them all to shame. Every fast song they know they play live twice as fast as they recorded them. |

Yeah, the Hackensaw Boys are the best old time band when it comes to looking after their fans in Europe. It makes me sad that I haven't seen them yet in London, because they always play my favorite venue there. I love it when bands are prepared to put in the miles - Old Crow have been good about it too, and everybody in Europe really appreciates it! |

Name: The Hackensaw Boys (Interview with Che Stratos, the group's Den Mother)
Members of group: PeePaw, Shiner, Mahlon, Dante J, The Kooky Eyed Fox, Smoky Fontaine, Salvage
Type of music: Americana Stringband (The Hook: Bluegrass mayhem)
When formed: 1999
Favorite local band not your own: no answer
Musical beginnings: The four core members came from diverse backgrounds, and were in a wide variety of bands. King Sour, Chigger, Route 11 Boys, Fried Moose, Supertanker, and Beau Pre, to name a few. They got together in 1999, and started playing on the Downtown Mall. In the early days, they grew to as many as 12 members. It got cold, so they started playing at the Blue Moon Diner. They recorded Get Some in a friend's parlor in July 2000.
Where do you play: Clubs, theaters and festivals nationwide
Biggest show: The Telluride Bluegrass Festival or Bonnaroo.
Most recent album: Keep It Simple is the last release. We're working on mastering and editing an album now, with John McCrea producing.
Plans: To build a Hackensaw nation one show at a time, and then conquer the world.
Recite the Quadratic Formula: Ok, I am a mother of two, the Den Mother to seven Hackensaw Boys, and at the end of the day can barely remember my own name, much less a math formula. |

This might be of interest to some of you: The Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar is a place in C-ville dedicated to, well, tea, and also has very good live music: www.teabazaar.com. If you click on "MonkeyClaus" from the home page they have audio of some of their shows. I enjoyed Robert St. Ours' (who used to be a Hackensaw) "Box of Pine." Further down, it has "in the studio" with David Sickmen listed 10/6, but there isn't a link. He's also listed under the Artist Page, but not much info. there. |
