There doesnt seem to be chords for hard to love (OCMS CD)so here's my best guess...Key on CD is A but I've done them as G shapes for capo2 as its easier for me on either guitar or banjo!

On the Dock Boggs Revenant CD there's a track by Kentucky banjo player, Hayes Shephard, called Hard For To Love that starts:
Oh it's hard for to love when you can't be loved
it's hard for to change your mind
When you’ve broken the heart of many a poor boy
But you’ll never break this heart of mine
the other verses are distinctly different but similar enough to be familiar
there's a "Who's gonna shoe your pretty little feet" verse
and a "Do you see that pretty turtle dove a-singing in the pines verse" |

The original thread is locked, so I'm posting this here.
The trickiest part of this song is definitely the rhythm, so I was careful to be accurate with it. The cool thing about this song is it keeps repeating with minimal variation, so once you've got that intro down, that's it! |

A little clarification on Hard To Love. Story by Ketch Secor in the spring of 2001.
"Now let me tell you a little bit of this - we're gonna give you this tune, now - we used to live up - you know I was talkin' - remember about my pig and my sheep, right - well back in that land of, uh, the free up in the fine State of North Carolina - the Old North State - we used to live up there - Avery and Watauga counties and - there was some real fine old musicians up there - i mean old people - old ladies and old men - people - people that could hardly walk but could still carry a tune - I met a woman up there about eighty-three years old - Margie Harmon - Margie Harmon, she, uh - she hadn't played the guitar in forty years - she didn't even have a set of guitar strings on her guitar...
...Margie Harmon, right - she, she brings out this chest, right - this old, dusty chest - after I put her guitar strings on for her and she plays John Hardy - this old lady, right - and she pulls out this old chest and dusts it off and opens up this old book and said 'now, my brother was killed in the Second World War, but we used to have a band and we used to tour all over the state and this is his songbook' - and I looked at the very first page and I saw this song Hard To Love And Not Be Loved - and, uh, so we went ahead and, uh, we went ahead and worked on this one - we recorded it but we never got to release it, because it was, uh, too crude - but we'll try this one - she went on the road with Bascom Lamar Lunsford if you know of his fame." |
