Here's the choruses so far as deciphered by bopanic... I think he's pretty much right. Anyone else feel free to post thoughts on the verses.

1st chorus

now mama she ain't hungry no more
she's waitin for a knock on the trailer door
its gonna rock you like a hurricane
its gonna rock you till you lose sleep
its gonna rock you till you're out of a job
its gonna rock you till you're out on the street
its gonna rock you when you're down on your knees
its gonna have you begging pretty please
its gonna rock you like a hurricane
methamphetamine...

2d chorus

now papa he aint hungry no more
he's waitin for a knock on the trailer door
its gonna rock you like a hurricane...

3d chorus

now listen to the whispering wind
it sounds like a big storm rolling in
its gonna rock you like a hurricane...

Amazing song... truly amazing.

If you wanna know more about Tennessee's meth problem then check HERE. I actually helped a little on the web end of this ad campaign. The print side was all flubbed up though. They printed a couple thousand brochures and banners with the wrong phone number. It went to a phone sex joint. mmm MMM porn & meth... delicious

But mama she ain't hungry no more
........Em................................D............
She's waitin’ for a knock on the trailer door

CHORUS

Methamphetamine...

Em | G | C

Don't need no PHD for a hundred-dollar car
Just find a crooked cop and that doctor disregard
’Cause when it’s either the mine or the Kentucky National Guard
I'd rather sell them a line than be dyin' in the coal yard
But papa he ain’t hungry no more
He's waitin’ for a knock on the trailer door

CHORUS

There's a war out there and it's fought by poor white men
From the plateau to the falls of the Cumberland
You better watch your back ‘cause you just can't trust a friend
Because the method man is gonna get you in the end
Now listen to the whispering wind
It sounds like a big storm rolling in

CHORUS

Ya, this song is really growing on me too - - - just the slow methodical, driving pace of the whole tune. This is a good one.

Does anyone think of Scorpions' Rock You Like A Hurricane at all when they hear it? I don't really ever but think it would be funny to mashup the 2, haha.

worst idea ever, rodge...

yeah -- you know, sometimes phrases get associated with songs. of course, growing up in the 80's that one goes along with the scorpions for me. oh well... i think it's a great line in the song - very fitting - almost as if there was some first-hand experience going on. Well, you know Ketch was talking about some of the stuff he'd seen in southern appalachia - it's a song that had some personal observation to draw on for inspiration.

TV series a sign that meth is creeping into pop culture
By JAKE COYLE
Associated Press
Posted: Feb. 19, 2008

New York - Vince Gilligan needed a character who would do something truly despicable. So he turned to the ugliest thing he could think of: methamphetamine.

The result is the new AMC series "Breaking Bad," where Gilligan's chemistry teacher protagonist, broke and dying of lung cancer, decides to leave his family financially secure by cooking and dealing meth.

Gilligan, creator and executive producer of the drama, said meth "seemed like somewhat untilled ground" in TV and movies.

His show is evidence of how methamphetamine, the most destructive drug in the country for more than a decade, has only recently begun to seep into pop culture.

Such reticence is unusual for Hollywood, which has been fascinated by drugs.

Think of cocaine, and you're likely to recall the 1980s TV series "Miami Vice" or the 1991 film "New Jack City." Heroin has "Trainspotting" (1996) or "The Basketball Diaries" (1995). There are many more, going all the way back to Billy Wilder's "The Lost Weekend," the 1945 film that chronicled alcoholism.

Now meth-related work is beginning to accumulate, with a trashy sensibility unique to the drug. The meth milieu is houses turned into disheveled laboratories and left reeking of toxic fumes.

The common thread to portrayals of meth is depravity - it's the lowest of lows, an unnatural, creepy fusion of toxic chemistry and backcountry dirt roads.

Before "Breaking Bad," Val Kilmer played a meth addict in 2002's "The Salton Sea." One of the first noteworthy novels to tackle meth, Mark Lindquist's "The King of Methlehem" was published last summer.

In January, the Drive-By Truckers (who perform Feb. 28 at the Pabst Theater, 144 E. Wells St.) released the song "You and Your Crystal Meth," a lamentation of a friend's addiction. The little-seen 2001 film "Cookers" turned a meth lab into a haunted house; an upcoming episode of the IFC sketch show "The Whitest Kids You Know" includes a parody song listing meth's ingredients. And in last year's "The Lookout," Jeff Daniels' character blames the drug for his blindness.

Hitting hard in rural areas
Methamphetamine was around for decades before a resurgence in the 1980s originated on the West Coast and swept across the country, taking firmest hold in poor rural areas.

More than 5% of Americans 12 or older have used meth at least once, according to the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Experts said lawmakers have been slow to react. Slower still have been the filmmakers and writers of Los Angeles and New York.

"If (prevalent meth use) had been going on in Westchester County, New York, or Bethesda, Maryland, methamphetamine would have been a national priority 15 years ago," said Rick Rawson, associate director of UCLA's integrated substance abuse programs

Patterson Hood, one of the singers and songwriters in the Drive-By Truckers, witnessed the effects of meth in his Alabama hometown. He penned "You and Your Crystal Meth" in response.

"At the time, nobody was talking about it," Hood said. "There wasn't songs about it; it wasn't getting much attention from the press."

Hood said the song has had a surprisingly polarizing effect on fans, resonating with those from middle America, while those from cities "don't get it."

Rock 'n' roll has been connected with drugs nearly since its inception. Simply the names of drugs suggest a tune: "Cocaine," by Eric Clapton; "Heroin," by the Velvet Underground.

One of the very few songs about meth was written by Bruce Springsteen more than a decade ago. "Sinaloa Cowboys" tells the story of a Mexican immigrant who dies in an explosion at a meth lab. Singer-songwriter James McMurtry has also frequently sung about meth and "cooking speed."

Not cool to sing about
"It's not a very romantic thing to sing about," Hood said. "There's nothing really cool or hip about it like some drugs have been at various times in our culture."

While glamorization is always an issue when representing drug use, fictional works can be powerful tools in expanding the public's understanding of a drug like meth. "It's a double-edged sword," Rawson said.

I reckon they've been listening to Neil Young, some of the new stuff has got a definite Young vibe.

There is a liteary concept called intertexuality. The definition is: the relationship that exists between different texts, especially literary texts, or the reference in one text to others
In my undergrad degree I was a literature minor. We often discussed whether the use of intertextuality was accidental or on purpose -- usually we agreed it was some of both, mostly on purpose.
I really think that this song deliberately uses intertextuality with Neil Young's Rock You Like a Hurricane. I just think they deliberately chose that phrase to envoke the image/feel/idea of Young. Mostly I think this because this song is this decade's Needle and the Damage Done.
When Young wrote Needle it really needed to be said - people were dying. I remember back in the early 90s, in college, getting a call from a buddy who said, turn on mtv right now. Young was on - it was some kind of awards show - he was doing Needle, which I don't believe he really sang much, but at that time, when herion was "cool" - it needed to be said again.
I think the Crows are saying what really needs to be said. Meth is a huge problem in small mountain towns. People need to be aware.
kelly
ps: I also think this was a deliberate use of intertextuality because the Crows are obviously Young fans and know his music well and because I think they sometimes approach music from this intellectual perspective.

I have to admit, I don't really care that much for this song...probably my least favorite on Pusher. Don't know what it is...feels a bit forced to me, but then again, i'm not really from meth country. Who knows.
