I notice from the Eutaw liner notes the Morgan mastered that CD, but Ben Gould was still the Upright player. So I got to wondering. Was Morgan in any bands before the Crows?

yep -- pretty common knowledge that Morgan used to play swing music up in Neuva Jork for a while. what is less known is that apparently Morgan is a bad-ass on the theremin...

Jimmy Page got nothin' on DMJ!!!

My ex-gf got one. It's pretty insane. It was a cheapy one... she needed some effects pedals for it. Fun to play around with for about 3 minutes, haha

Well, I liked playin with her much longer than the theremin. Both would make some pretty wild noises when I put my hands on 'em.

Wink

I've looked pretty hard and never found much on the Web.

I'm laughing at myself, Stu. I didn't mean to say, of course, that my modest effort was the last word. We'll leave that for someone who knows something!

Let's see.....this I gathered from media-type stuff from the band and others, as well as a teeny-tiny bit from him.

He got into swing back when it became trendy again in the 90's. He did the whole shabang: dressing and acting the part, cutting the rug and all that jive. He used to maintain a website, a swing smorgasboard of sorts with local NYC swing stuff.
I know somehow he was involved either in the band or occasionally playing bass when needed for a Nashville band called Col. J.D. Wilkes and Th' Legendary Shack Shakers. I've seen folks on a website or two mention seeing him when he played for them, but as to any actual tangible proof, nobody's sharing.

I'm being cautious of what I'm saying moderators, so as not to have "the law dog" lay into me. You'd think us both being from the same place he'd cut me some slack...but no. Wink
Not that it's top secret or anything- it's all stuff that was volunteered by MJ and those involved to be in the public arena.

Great stuff mountain_plucked. Thank you.

I'm wasn't really wanting to dig and delve into personal stuff, I was just hoping to track down any recordings Morgan might have been involved in.

Cool (if true) that he played with the Shack Shakers, but they sure ain't no Swing band Laughing

D. Morgan Jahnig - Swing Music (Old Crow Medicine Show Bassist)

This article is from August 1998. No clarification on Morgan's prior history in bands, but amusing anyway.
