I just noticed today that Gill is mentioned as a member of the band on the boys' MySpace page. (Critter is, too; don't panic.) Maybe it's been that way for a long time, but I think it's a classy way to recognize how he's helped out on so many occasions.

even with critter on the stage, it's hard to get a pic with all of them in it. nothing against gill. at all.

Kevin is their secret weapon! That guitjo is a very understated subtle aspect of their signature sound.

Personally I have always considered Gil a member of he band. Anyone that can come through like that while Critter is off and step up to the task of banjer pickin and resonator playin as well as bring their own tunes to the table while they are putting their own solo career and other band aside for a moment is a cool @ss cat! Sorry for the run-on but I was trying to pack it all into one sentence.

IMNSHO there is no Old Crow Medicine Show without Kevin or Gil.

. . . .and I'll wrap up this post with yet another DAMN I miss ole Critter statement.

I saw them play in Asheville during their Fall 2006 run which it included both Critter and Gill, probably my favorite Old Crow show I've ever seen...besides the fact that my ex-girlfriend wanted to leave early, but I digress...

anyways why not let Gill join permanently anyways, Gill + Critter at all times = me happy

I haven't see the boys in a bit of time now...

Is Critter on another leave of absence? My very first show had Gil instead of Critter. Since then, it's been all Critter.

I never thought to view Gill's photos from his myspace page. I'll have more up later today.

Gill Landry
The Ballad of Lawless Soirez
added: 11 Aug 2008 // release date: 8 Sep 2008 // label: Nettwerk
reviewer: Andy Snipper

This is so much the real deal!

Gill Landry has been associated with Americana band Old Crow Medicine Show but this collection is a completely different kettle of poisson and frankly it is the best piece of roots Americana I have heard this year.
The songs have the feel of a thirties or forties film noir but the subjects are drifters, criminals, lovers, drunks, and border bums and the way the characters are brought to vivid life the listener can feel the desperation and edge the players represent.

From the opener. 'Poor Boy’, with its echoey guitar and drunken drumming, lonely violin and those dark vocals setting the scene, to 'Lawless Soirez’ with a trumpet putting you in a Mexicali sunset and the ballad of the loser of the title and then to 'Dixie’ – all country violin and 'With our arms round each other, drinkin’ Dixie in the gutter; waiting for the sunrise again' these are real stories and Landry has the happy knack of telling the stories in such a way that you can see yourself as the observer.
The playing throughout is stunning and the music plays its part without being the focus for the listener – it is all about the stories and the music simply emphasises and locates the songs – 'Lonliness’ could only represent the boy lost in New Orleans when you hear the trombone and trumpet together. The variation in styles is incredible but unlike some other collections that have no single musical style this is appropriate and not confused.

None of the stories are particularly uplifting but they still manage to put a smile on your face and the sixth or seventh time through the songs are still great to listen to. It’s difficult to realise that this is a debut album so confident is the music and the performance but if this is the beginning of his career I am really looking forward to his future.

I think the album has been available as a digital download from Gill's myspace page for quite some time. I'm sorry I don't know more about it.

They must be re-releasing it. I had a CD of this before I saw the Old Crows last October.

Yep! it says 2006 on my copy and the fiddler is Annie Ford. Special thanks to The Old Crows amongst others.

It is a great album though. One of my favourites.

As a requirement for being a member here, I am making it mandatory that you buy ever Kitchen Syncopators (Gil's old band) album which can be found HERE. Start mailing me your receipts, folks!

Seriously, ya'll really need to just get them. If you love WaWa and Eutaw, you're gonna love these. I guarantee it or my name ain't Nathan Arizona!

Listen to samples there and tell me wrong... I dare ya!

Gill was a crow for a while in 2005 or 6 (wasn't it) so maybe that's when he got the connection with Nettwerk Records. And maybe the funds too ...

Good call on the Syncopators, Rodge. they're on my shopping list for sure.

Lawless Soirrez is also neck and neck with OCMS, Eutaw, and Gillian Welch's Revival as the most reached for albums in our house for the last year. I've just ordered three Syncopators albums. I am ready for MORE!
