Gill Landry is currently doing a 2nd stint as a touring Crow and has an album of his own out on Nettwerk Records called Lawless Soirez. He is a member of The Kitchen Syncopators and has been known to perform under the stagename of Frank Lemon.
His Myspace site has some demo's and other extra bits up at the moment.
This thread is for .... YES ... Lyrics and Chords to Gill's songs.
So far we've got:
Dixie
Lawless Soirez
Mexico
Loneliness (help needed for the riff)
Ugly Town
Mutiny
Junkers Blues (Lyric discussion)
Coal Black Heaven
Til I Fell (Kitchen Syncopators)
Never Coming Here Again

Thanks to sassmouth for requesting this one
DIXIE
................D
With our arms round each other
............A
Drinkin Dixie in the gutter
G...............................D
Waitin for the sunrise again
D...........................................A
Watchin all the streetcars and tourists in cigar bars
G............................D
Drinkin martinis and gin
D..........................................A
You'd tell some stories we'd both tell some lies
Bm...........................G
Under the pale black skies
..........G................................A
And every now and then we'll be here again
...........G.................A............D
in the gutter drinkin Dixie my friend.
All the people we'd meet playin music in the street
singing the cocaine blues til dawn
We'd talk and spin big down by The Blind Pig
For one more round and a song
Passin our time with whiskey and wine
And women that never stayed long
Some came from France, some came from chance
But the best came from the Midwest
.........G.................................A
We travelled down rivers we travelled down roads
........D..........................................G
we travelled down broke through the rain and the snow
.......Em7.............................G....................A
we leaned on the shoulders of highways that abused us like friends
........G..............................A
We caught those trains just like a disease
.................D....................................G
With our heads in the clouds and our hearts on its knees
Em7...............................................G......A
Looking for something that we may never find
Jake had to ramble took all he could handle
And Augie he's just bound to die
Sometimes I miss em and sometimes I don't
Sometimes I break down and ask why
Why are things this way and what makes things that way
and which way if any way's right
I'm alone with my friends down in my sin
in the gutter drinkin Dixie again
2nd Chorus is in the CDs Lyric sheet but isn't on the CD version of the song
We drank to the future we drank to the the past
we drank to the moments we knew wouldn't last
leaning on the shoulders of highways that abused us like friends
We caught those trains just like a disease
With our heads in the clouds and our hearts on its knees
Looking for something that we may never find |

LAWLESS SOIREZ - GILL LANDRY
Cm
Lying in my bed got no dreams in my head
.......G.......................................Cm
that haven't been drug cross the floor
Cm
waiting for the sun buried on the ocean
......G...................................................Cm
for what feels like ten thousand years or more
...........Fm......................Cm
I have seen the mountain I have walked the valleys
G.....................................Cm
I've been through the cities I have walked the alleys
Fm............................Cm
on a summer evening with the racoons grieving
G................................Cm
I've seen the cold dark mare
...........Bb......................Eb
I was young and bold falling in love with barmaids
G................................Cm
out on cemetary row
...........Fm......................Cm
my pockets lined with gold, waiting for the crusades
G................................Cm
to leave this helpless world alone
==
I looked from flesh and bone on the place that I called home
standing in the ruins of downtown
Iron lace haunted street, itching heel has got me beat
but there's nothing that important to me now
I was born a rambler I guess I always will
once you get the habit you just can't stand still
but now I'm all dishevelled running like the devil
on my hind legs in the sun
There were many times I wish that I'd have stayed
but I know I can't go home
I tried to stay in time but time slips away
now I'm out here on my own
==
instrumental from Fm
==
when you're poor without a dream this old world keeps getting mean
and happiness is just a word you know
left in a world of pain ten thousand miles of railroad train
it doesn't really matter where I go
Cross the states by moonlight I often wonder
if they'll ever hang me for all the love I stole
O Mr Organ Grinder Please tell me where to find Her
O Lady Luck just dropped me cold
Sometimes I'm lost sometimes I'm driven
sometimes I know not where to roam
they're gonna bury me on some forgotten morning
until then I have no home |

No worries, mate. I must have typed Mexico direct into the forum reply box Nearly went to do that again
Here's Mexico
.....Bm
My baby loves her talisman and her Holy Ghost
.....A
My baby loves her moonshine and the urchin's smoke
...............G
She loves voodoo swamp angels under cypress groves
F#.......................F#7............Bm
But my baby don't love me no more
My baby loves her addiction and her stolen pearls
Loves her conviction to a frozen world
She loves drunk alleys telephones
But my baby don't love me no more
My baby loves her monkey and her burglar's wine
My baby loves her dungeon and matters of time
She loves blood red roses in December snow
But my baby don't love me no more
My baby loves the city and her social crutch
My baby loves the cop and his brutal touch
My baby loves my money and Mexico
But my baby don't love me no more
Are they the same chords that I thought last time? |

Hahah I'm all in knots with the riff for the verses to Loneliness right now
I'm hoping to work through em all unless anyone else gets here first. Don't know how many I'll finish before Xmas, though. I'll be away from the web for a couple of weeks, then. I'll give Ugly Town a push up the list |

LONELINESS
something like:
Cm/Cm7/G/CmG
Cm/Cm7/G/CmG riffs under the verses
Talkin to myself out in the rain
with a belly full of bourbon and a heart full of pain
Lookin for someone who might even care
But in vain, lord, i can't find one anywhere
It's two in the morning in this American town
And true love can't be found
Fm
Loneliness in the middle of nowhere
Cm
and nobody cares who you are
Fm
Happiness, can't even go there
G............................................G7
It passed out at the end of the bar
I gave her my heart she sold me her lies
while blowing right through me
with her hurricane eyes
Mathematicians have problems
we just couldn't get along
Now everything is broken everything's gone wrong
I should have left it at Paris but could not refuse
One more chance to lose
Loneliness in the middle of nowhere
and nobody cares who you are
Happiness, can't even go there
It got killed by a falling star
It's a strange world getting stranger everyday
Only yesterday I heard a stranger say
My heart's been broken and mended so many times
it looks like Frankenstein
Loneliness in the middle of nowhere
and nobody cares who you are
Happiness, once tried to go there
It got killed by a falling star |

mutiny is my fave on that album...no request for chords seeing as my only musical talents are an off key warble and blowing around on a harmonica. just thought that i'd put it out there that mutiny was my fave, |

What have you got so far, NiknJen. I know some folks here have the Syncopators CDs so you'd get some help. I've got them on my shopping list, though. Which one's it on? |

He sang it live on his first stint with the guys.
He actually posted the lyrics here when he used to come on in "disguise". I think it was on the same thread were he tried to get a rumor going that he and Critter didn't like each other. It was just a joke and no one took the bait though. That was back in the day! Any other "old-timers" remember that thread?
Anyway here's what I got: (some of the words are "sounds like" words)
Junker Blues
Well they call, they call me a junker, because I’m loaded all the time.
I don’t use no reefer, I get knocked out with that cherry wine.
Well six months, six months in a center. That one year aint no time,
They got buzzard pretty bed tray night after night
Well I was standin’ I was standin’ on the corner, with my reefer in my hand.
Well the ? stood beside ya took my reefer out my hand.
Well some people they crave fried chicken, some people crave a porterhouse steak.
Well when I shoot that junk all I want is my milk and cake.
Well my mother, my mother she told me, and my father told me too,
Best stop shooting that junk boy, gonna be the death of you.
Ya my brother, my brother use a needle and my sister sniff cocaine.
When I don’t use that junk I’m the nicest boy you ever seen. |

I missed that - I arrived after the hacks. Here's my guess at the missing lyrics. Anyone know if they've sung it since Gill's been back?
Quote: Well they call, they call me a junker, because I’m loaded all the time.
I don’t use no reefer, I get knocked out with that cherry wine.
that merry wine? berry wine? sounds like merry to me
Quote: Well six months, six months in a center. That one year aint no time,
They got buzzard pretty bed tray night after night
They got busted pretty bad traded nine for ninety nine
Quote: Well I was standin’ I was standin’ on the corner, with my reefer in my hand.
Well the ? stood beside ya took my reefer out my hand.
Well the next thing the sergeant took my reefer out of my hand |

COAL BLACK HEAVEN
Dm.....................F
If you can hear my poor voice calling
Bb........................F
Drown in a bottle of black rain falling
Dm..C...............Dm
down through the sky
There is a land of thieves and wonder
eyes full of smoke and ears full of thunder
under all this glitter
F...........C..................Dm
I heard a boneyard train screaming
F..........C........Dm
above a vale of tears
F.......C.....................Dm
I see Coal Black Heaven's red fog rolling in
F..............C.....................Dm
down down down through the years |

Thanks Dan.
That's on "Underwood" according to the Kitchen Syncopators website. It's out of print (the only one I haven't got ) so I can't check where the dots go for you.
You can Edit your post though if you're around. |

This Youtube video explains how to play Blind Blake's That'll Never Happen No More, and is pretty close to the way The Kitchen Syncopators play it.

Gumbo,
That is a shame about underwood being out of print, it is one of their best. Yazoo City Strugglers is IMO their Best and Underwood is probably their 2nd best. Underwood is certainly the best produced of their albums. Check U tube maybe their is a video of the Syncopaters playing Till I fell. I think Til I fell is th best Song Gil has written. great song.
Someone confused me though, in relation to Til I fell she told me " I always loved that song" when i played it, and she'd never heard of the syncopaters. It's credited to Frank Lemon on the album. Frank Lemon is Gil's alter ego in the syncopaters. And I have never heard it anywhere else. So I am wondering where she thinks she's heard it before? |

Never Coming Here Again
With your Bm pistol 'neath your pillow and your Bm7 dreams all full of lead
your F# eyes are dark and icy cold, your Bm lies are worth their weight in gold
Bm killed your love on main street, you Bm7 shot it through the head
with F# cold steel and broken truth, and a Bm red dress and your hollow tooth
and you Bm7 feel like bonnie parker and you Em feel
like Em7 finding you a diamond that it's Bm worth your time to steal
you Bm7 don't know where you're going, don't Em matter where you've been
you Em7 know you're never F#m comin' here Bm again
out on the concrete catwork, through the ruin and the rain
headed out of every scene and hungry like a magazine
slavedrivers damn you cause you won't dig their coal
and the slaves they all resent you cause you haven't sold your soul
and you hear the roaring laughter and you hear
it's just what people know about themselves that makes them fear
diggin graves by moonlight in an old magnolia wind
you know you're never coming here again
crooked hearts in italian boots burning at the sole
you crucified everyone you love on a telephone pole
riding free on sinking ships with love letters for sails
drinking gin with faithless men and stepping on the Devil's tail
and you feel the world is ending and you feel
like anybody would in five inch bright red leather heels
trying to convince yourself that you care what happens next
but you know it doesn't matter in the end
besides you're never coming here again |

hi - well spotted.
it isn't surprising that my chords sound off as I've just realised that I've been playing this a step down from Gill's key.
this clip brief and blurry as it is, looks like a capo on 4 and sounds like the Am and E shapes which makes it C#m and G#/Ab for the first verse. So we agree there!
then a Dm shape to get the F#m for the start of the second part (I have seen etc) I don't hear a major chord there. So I think my chord pattern works there, too. I don't hear the long E chord through those lines, and you can see the changes n this longer and better clip
in the third part, 1st line (I was young and bold etc) there is something different alright.
I'm assuming you used my text to show your chords and left in the third part in your post with my chords on it? The Fm etc Is that right?(!! or do you think the third part changes radically from the others? !!) |
