So, I've been a casual fan of the Old Crow Medicine Show for about the past five years. I'd always told myself I should check out a show of their's, but my schedule, my finances, and OCMS's schedule never seemed to match.
I'm a huge Tom Petty fan (sat front row, center for the TPATH concert last July here in Atlanta) and when I logged onto TomPetty's webstie earlier this week, the first headline was "Benmont hits the road with Sara Watkins." I checked it out, and sure enough, one of the shows was at the Fox Theatre in downtown.
I had checked out tickets for the OCMS show earlier in the year, but told myself I'd wait till closer to showtime to buy tickets. Once I saw that Benmont was going to be there, I convinced myself that this was the perfect time for me to get my first OCMS experience. One of my friends is a huge fan of Kevin's guitjo playing, and likes a few OCMS songs, so I invited him to come along. I found two tickets on Stubhub for about $50/piece in the second row... I figured that was a more than fair price for me to get that close to one of my musical idols.
Those of you who were there (and I met a few of you! Jason in particular!) know how the show went, and I have to say, the review I posted on the TPATH forum had the hardcore Petty fans all excited. Hardly any of the regulars there are going to these three shows, and only a small few have been able to see Benmont perform with Sara.
I'm still blown away by the talent and the passion these guys have for their music. I didn't know it was possible for a band without a drummer to have that much rhythm. I've always enjoyed bluegrass (Del McCoury, Flat & Scruggs, OCMS, Ralph Stanley), but I never did give enough attention to the thought of how great a live show would be.
I just want to thank everyone associated with OCMS for welcoming Benmont Tench on this tour... The man has a talent (he's been playing piano for 52 years!) that doesn't get fully exploited when he's on stage with my idols from Gainesville, but last night, Benmont tapped into that musical aura that seemed to be in the air for all the musicians last night. I feel so fortunate to have seen this, and believe me when I say this won't be my last OCMS show! |

Welcome!
What you've shared in only two posts is quite interesting. It's kind of quiet here on the weekend, but I'm sure others will soon be telling you, "Howdy!" |

Definitely! I would have hung out afterward, but my friend and I had to see what the damage was up in Canton. Lots of twigs and leaves on the ground, but everything ended up fine. |
