| I picked up their European release at MerleFest and got them all to autograph it too.... really nice. And you want to hear Rhiannon doing some beautiful singing... she was in a stage production in Greensboro and she did three seasons. I have a Christmas recording - and her signing O HOly Night freakin brings tears to my eyes. She was trained as a opera singer.... |

Five questions with Dom Flemons, Carolina Chocolate Drops guitarist, banjoist

They're young players of old-time music. The Carolina Chocolate Drops consists of North Carolina natives Rhiannon Giddens (banjo) and Justin Robinson (fiddle), with Arizona transplant Dom Flemons (guitar, banjo) rounding out the trio. Don't be surprised if these ultra-gifted string-band players turn out to be one of the breakout acts at this year's Ann Arbor Folk Festival. The group plays both Friday and Saturday night at the fest, the event that's generally considered metro Detroit's top folk gathering of the year. The Drops' Dom Flemons recently spoke to the Free Press as he was traveling to a gig in Atlanta.
QUESTION: As you're out touring the country, do you sense that there is a true roots music revival going on?
ANSWER: I have been feeling that to some degree, but I'm not completely sure. So far, I see a lot of people interested in it, and more people are coming out and getting active in it. As to whether there will be a full-on rebirth, it'll take a few more years to see if this is going to be a gigantic revival. There has been a generational shift in America, a shift where there has been a new fusion of all styles of music.
Q: Where does your interest in playing African-American string-band music come from?
A: I started off playing on the street and did a lot of '60s folk: Dave Van Ronk, Dylan, Mississippi John Hurt, Roscoe Holcomb, Taj Mahal, Koerner and Glover. That led to the Beatles and Rolling Stones, Carl Perkins and Chuck Berry. I started playing all that stuff and then started playing older stuff; there was always a link back to something older.
Our repertoire includes a lot of fiddle and banjo music, old-time blues. Some old-time jazz and country (are) in there along with a couple of surprises. There are different parts of the American song form mixed and weaved together.
Q: Do you have plans to release a new album soon?
A: We recently were in Pasadena working on a new album that will be released on the Nonesuch label. We're hoping it'll be out this fall. They're a great company, having been associated with Elektra Records and the famous Explorer series.
Q: Who produced the album?
A: We worked with (onetime metro Detroiter) Joe Henry at his home studio. We were talking producers, and his name came up along with Tchad Blake, and it came down to those two. Tchad was living in Wales, and none of us wanted to go there. Plus we looked at some of Joe Henry's credits, and that alone was enough for us to say yes. He's produced Solomon Burke, Bettye LaVette and Allen Toussaint, just really amazing records that are all so natural sounding. Everything he's done has not been tampered with in an unmusical, unnatural way.
The music flowed when we were working with him. It was a wonderful experience at the Garfield house. (Henry's residence in South Pasadena, Calif., was once that of President James Garfield).
Q: Can you name a musician or two who has been particularly important to you in terms of being an influence or a mentor?
A: Taj Mahal is an absolutely wonderful person. He's a legend in his own right and has been very, very supportive of us; there's nothing better than to have the support of someone we trust and respect. Joe Thompson is a 90-year old fiddler from North Carolina who we've met and learned a lot from, and there's Mike Seeger, who worked in the New Lost City Ramblers for years. He's been very open with everything he's done and has been so awesome with all of us. A number of folkies and scholars have been open with their time and resources, letting us be a part of their community. It's nice to be inspired by people who've done this work all their lives. It's mind-blowing!

| I had the pleasure of working with Rhiannon Giddens over the summer for a week at the Augusta Heritage Center. She was a vocal week instructor and I got to talk to her one day while I shuttled her and her baby to her sound check. She is so nice and friendly and made me appreciate the CCD even more, they are defiantly a great band. |

THAT CCD MERLEFEST ALBUM WITH BOB CARLIN AND JOE THOMPSON IS A MUST BUY.
its a really great listen
and for those learning old time banjo or fiddle its provides some easy first tunes to learn
the banjos are in open G

Great show last night... Definitely a hometown crowd. Good news out of the show include a new release at the beginning of next year AND a song book coming out this fall. They have been transcribing a lot of the traditional songs for fiddle and banjo.
John Dee Holeman did a short set before CCD went on. He was pretty amazing. Dom sat in a few songs with him.

I ordered the new CCD record last month from nonesuch. It came with a free download of the MP3s, plus a few live tracks. I got the MP3s in my mailbox last night, and I'm listening to it now. Good stuff! Glad to hear a studio version of Snowden's Jig. I have never been a huge fan of Hit 'em Up Style, but the studio version is pretty good.
I think you can still order it with the live MP3s from the nonesuch website. |

seen them last night in Knoxville. They were VERY good. I have seen them quite a few times, and left impressed, but last night i was completely blown away. THey have gotten even better than the last time I seen them.
The Low Anthem opened for them, and they were equally as amazing.
It was a great night of music! |
