Does anyone know the lyrics & chords to this song? I'm playing a mandolin. |

Here's one version. The final? - see banter at end. I don't know of another that exists past 4/12/01, so this may well be the last one.
CROW BLACK CHICKEN (as performed 4/12/01)
Well I went on the mountain to give my horn a blow
I thought I heard that pretty little gal say “Yonder come my beau”
Crow black chicken and crow for day
Crow black chicken and fly away
Crow black chicken, crow for days
I like chicken pie!
Ketch: (I love that chicken pie! Yum! Yum! Yum!)
Well the chicken crowed for midnight and the chicken crowed for day
Along come an owl (A-hoo!) and stole my chicken away
Crow black chicken and crow for day
Crow black chicken and fly away
Crow black chicken, Oooooh,
I like chicken pie!
I wish I had an old frame house, eighteen stories high
Every story in that house would be packed with chicken pie
Crow black chicken and-a crow for day
Crow black chicken and-a fly away
Crow black chicken and-a crow for days
I like chicken pie!
Critter?: (Bwock! Bock! I like chicken pie!)
K, W & C: (Bwock! Bwock! Bwock! B-gock-b-gock!
Bwock! Bwock! Bwock! B-gock-b-gock!
Bwock! Bwock! Bwock! B-gock-b-gock!
I like chicken pie!)
Well the hardest work that ever I done was plowin’ a field of rye
And the easiest work that ever I done was eatin’ that Critter pie
Crow black chicken and-a crow for day
Crow black chicken and-a fly away
Crow black chicken, crow for day
I like Critter pie!
K, W & C: (Bwock! Bwock! Bwock! B-gock-b-gock!
Bwock! Bwock! Bwock! B-gock-b-gock!
Bwock! Bwock! Bwock! B-gock-b-gock!
I like chicken pie!) 2x
Critter?: (Ooooooo-oooooo-ooooooo!!!)
Willie: (That was a rooster!... Let’s hear those chickens now!)
Crowd: (Various chicken noises)
Well if I had a silver thread, so fine as I could sew
I’d sew a chicken to my back and drive to Idaho
Crow black chicken and crow for day
Crow black chicken and fly away
Crow black chicken, crow for days
I like chicken pie!
Ketch: (With a side of mashed potatoes)
Well the chicken crowed for midnight and the chicken crowed for days
Along come a Ford (A-woogah!) and stole my chicken away
Crow black chicken and crow for day
Crow black chicken and fly away
Crow black chicken and crow for days
I like chicken pie! Bwock-bock-bock!
Crow black chicken and-a crow for day
Crow black chicken and-a fly away
Crow black chicken, crow for days
I like chicken pie!
Crow black chicken and-a crow for day
Crow black chicken and-a fly away
Crow black chicken, crow for days
I like chicken pie! BWOCK!!!!
Ketch: “Alright! Say goodbye to that chicken – we done plucked her.”
Willie: “Say goodbye to that one folks, that was it.”

First time I ever heard this was through a tape of Jerry Garcia's Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers project from June, 1962 - he probably heard the New Lost City Ramblers do it or possibly even the late 20's Uncle Dave Macon recording of it. Lyrics pretty much the same except the chicken gets knocked away by the owl and the Ford, the house is fifteen stories, and no one sews a chicken to any part of themselves. |

Some of you might be missing this track. Sounds earlier than Troubles Up and Down the Road to me. Was Chicken Pie/Crow Black Chicken ever released? |

The more I listen to this the more I think it sounds like a Eutaw outtake - listen to the natural echo on Ketch's voice at the beginning. And I don't hear any audience ... |

I've been picking this one out on my fiddle and have the basics but want to add a bit more to it. Anyone else play fiddle? |

This is one of my favorite OCMS songs!!! I just got my fiddle...so one day I hope I can learn this tune!
I also have a dulcimer. I'm new to the site...is there much stuff for dulcimers on here? |

If there is, it's buried deep.... I don't think I've seen anything concerning dulcimers in depth anywhere.
Cool instrument, though. I've played around with one quite a bit, they're fairly easy to learn. Good luck! |

Thanks!
I'm more concerned with working on my fiddling right now anyway. I just plink around on the dulcimer. I'm going to try and see if I can do some version of Worried Mary...maybe look at banjo tunes...and see if I can make it up. |
