Hell yeah, whenever I play it, it's 'Johnson City, Tenneseeeeeeee', giving it a nice four beats of lingering 'eeee' that set up the intensity of 'well I GOTTA get a move on'. Heard and played the song a thousand times and could easily go for a thousand more.

/ = slide up
\ = slide down
_ = flat note; for instance, "2" on the A string is a C, while "2" is a C#

Note that this is for a fiddle in AEAE tuning, not standard tuning. I wasn't really sure on the proper way of notating in a few places, particularly the change in hand position. Hopefully there aren't too many mistakes. Or liberties, as I like to call them. Very Happy Scroll down further for the sheet music (which might be helpful for those wanting to learn the song in standard tuning rather than the recommended cross-tuning).

Cornfed, let me know how it goes. I made some improvements so it's a little more accurate now.

This song's the reason I picked up the fiddle and I remember looking everywhere on the internet for a fiddle tab and being pretty surprised not to find one, considering its popularity. I understand it goes against the folk tradition of learning by ear but if it encourages someone I think tabs are a great tool.

Anyway, the hardest part of the song for me is the bowing. I'm still a bit shaky. I was thinking of adding bowing marks but maybe that's a bit much.

Yes and no Stu. You have to realize that by "1", it's meant the seond fret or natrual position for the 1st finger in 1st position. "2" means 2nd finger on the 4th fret, "3" 3rd finger on the 5th fret. Read the notes on my Soldiers Joy tab to see how this works.

Just watched a gal from Tennessee get the green flag for Hollywood on Am Idol. Her audition song "Wagon Wheel" by OCMS!!!!!!!!! I nearley peed myself!

There was a blog I read a couple years ago tracing the origins of Wagon Wheel beyond Dylan, maybe a generation or two. It also explored the development of the lyrics from what might have made more immediate sense. I can't find that blog now. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Or could they provide those original sources?

There's an Arthur Crudup song that i think Dylan has played on his theme time radio called Rock Me Mama, that gets cited (perhaps even by Dylan) but those three words are pretty much the whole connection

GumboStu, it looks like someone took the trouble of adapting my fiddle tab for the mandolin here. This would also be useful for anyone wanting to learn the fiddle part through standard musical notation as well (although rhythmically it's incorrect). Still gotta tune that mandolin to AEAE though. Confused

i don't think that works with my pdf viewer. is there meant to be lots of capital 'B's where the notes go?

cross tuning could be pretty coolif i ever find another super-cheap mandolin .....

Just found your tab with the cross tuning for Wagon Wheels, thanks for going to the effort!

Not sure what it'll be like for me to play on a cross tuned violin...I'm a fiddling noob, come from a classical background, but a group of friends want to play this and asked me to join them. Am excited!

Stu, I used to cross tune my mandolin before I started fiddlin' Lot of fun, but even worse than retuning a fiddle to change keys, lol.

I was drivin' down the road today, listening to the Jon Boy & Billy show on the radio, when they ended one of their skits with a recitation of some of the Wagon Wheel lyrics. Wha? (I hadn't been payin' much attention.) Jon Boy says "That makes me wanna hear some Old Crow Medicine Show! Ya'll wait, I'll go to the truck & get it!" Anyway, he comes back after the normal break and they proceed to play Wagon Wheel right there on the show, all of 'em singin' along there at the end... Pretty neat. Especially considering the JB&B show carrier around here is a classic rock station.

W.W. beat the tar out of hearin' "You Shook Me All Night Long" again. Laughing

You should be able to listen to it here

12/8 seems like a weird time signature, but it's an effective way of capturing that "4/4 with a triplet rhythm" that the fiddle uses. It could also be written in 4/4, but I don't know how to tell the program to play it with a swing feel in that time signature, thus 12/8.
