Any way you can, Penelippy.
Started playing myself a year ago and it's quickly becoming my favorite instrument.
Especially since my friends are limited to the guitar/banjo.
*grin*
It's fun being needed. |

No doubt!!! GET THAT THING!!! Oh how I wish I had my great-uncle's banjo!! Got sold at his estate sale back in the 40's...
Funny story about Soldier's Joy -- my son and I were at this canoeing event back in June and they had a "bluegrass" band playing -- a bunch of old fellas... so I go up and ask if they know Soldier's Joy or the Hanged Man's Reel - they agree to play Soldier's Joy -- they got this octogenarian on the fiddle who gets ready to start it off -- guitar man asks "what key's this in?" and the old fella says "C" -- he saws the first chord and the guitar man says "sounds like "D" to me" -- so he says ""D" it is, then" and just goes to TOWN... blew my mind -- my boy and I are kickin' heels and they played it for all it was worth. Later on every one of them old-timers came up to us and said they hadn't had such fun in a long time, having folks dance while they played -- they said they'd much rather play the "old stuff" than the "bluegrass" sh*t - especially when "young" folks like us kick up the dust for them... made my day and theirs, too... |

That is my absolute favorite clip. I send it to anyone who asks me who Old Crow is. What I can't figure out is how kayakgrl was able to hold the camera steady! I can't sit still just watching it on the computer screen! AWESOME! |

Here is my first try at a fiddle tab. This is a bastardized version of tab notation, kind of like that on fiddle hub and kind of my own. Read the key to understand the notation. I am not using note timing like the guy does on fiddlehub, but more or less dashes inbetween notes to kind of tip you on how they are played. Once you play around with it I think you'll get the feel for it.
This is how Ketch plays it (or close to it), not how you will hear many others play it. I will try to get a clip up for you to hear soon.
> = slide up
1L = first finger (1st fret or 1/2 step from open)
1 = first finger (2nd fret or whole step from open)
2L = second finger (3rd fret or 1/2 step up from 1)
2 = second finger (4th fret or whole step up from 1)
3 = third finger (5th fret or 1/2 step up from 2)
4L = fourth finger (6th fret or 1/2 step up from 3)
4 = fourth finger (7th fret or whole step up from 3)

I was impressed that my husband recognized the tune. I must play it too often. |

I fear I may never learn the fiddle, cause I can't figure them out either.
And I usually got enough of an ear to figure out exactly HALF a song. |

GDAE - Standard Tuning Fiddle Tab for "Soldier's Joy"
Did this from memory, I'll double check later when I get my fiddle out. You should be able to drone the A and D in Part 1 and E and A in Part 2 for the most part. I didn't indicate sharps and flats, but "/" = slide up in part 2. Let me know how it goes.
Part 1
E|--------------------------------------------------------------------------
A|-3-1-0--------0--------0-1-0-2-3---3-1-0--------0--------------------
D|--------2-0-2---2-0-2----------------------2-0-2---2-0-2-3-4-3-2-1--
G|--------------------------------------------------------------------------
E|------------------------------------------1-3-1---0-2-0---1-1-1-1-
A|------0--------0-------0-1-0-2-3--0-3--------3--------2-3-3-3-3-
D|-2-3---2-0-2---2-0-2----------------------------------------------
G|---------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 2
E|-/1-0-1-2-3--1-0---0-1-2--/1-0-1-2-3--1-0-----------
A|-------------------3----------------------------3-2-1-0--
D|-----------------------------------------------------------
G|-----------------------------------------------------------
E|-/1-0-1-2-3--1-0---0-1-2--/1-3-1---0-2-0---1-1-1-1-
A|-------------------3------------------3-------2-3-3-3-3-
D|-----------------------------------------------------------
G|-----------------------------------------------------------
Since I still have a lot of free time, I'll be working on more of these this summer hopefully. |
