JIMMY SUTTON

Well I took my gun, I went a-huntin'
Bang went the gun, down went the mutton
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...

Oh I can't stand meal, I can't stand mutton
Don't give a damn for old Jimmy Sutton, No!
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...

Oh I took my gun, I went a-huntin'
Bang went the gun, down went the mutton
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...

Well Lord I can't stand meal, I can't stand mutton
I don't give a damn for old Jimmy Sutton
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...

Guitar: A/D
Fiddle: D tuning (ADAE)

OCMS's version, lyrically speaking, is most similar to the first and fourth verses of Warner & Davis' version from Old-Time Songs For Kids (1989). There are many different verses and versions to this tune, which is alleged to have originated in the Upper South.

Tommy Jarrell's version is probably as close to the way it was as you'll hear. You can see him play it here at the 4:00 mark, but the whole thing is well worth your watching. His verses:

Sheep, sheep, sheep and mutton
If you can't dance that, you can't dance nothin'
Baa!!
Baa! Old Jimmy Sutton

Kill us a sheep and eat the mutton
We'll save the tail for Old Jimmy Sutton
Baa!!
Baa! Old Jimmy Sutton

I don't know anything about this song, but I think this really loud guy in straw hat was yelling for it a few weeks back.

Tell me about it, why don't ya? I'd love to have that whole Aly Bain series. I just recently got Les Blank's "Sprout Wings and Fly" on DVD, which also includes "My Old Fiddle" and "Julie" on the same disc for one reasonable price. Every OCMS fan should own this. You can't have too much Tommy Jarrell in your life.

STU! - Man, there's some good'ns there! Love Tommy's "Chilly Winds". No lyric with that one, though.

The DaCosta Woltz's Southern Broadcasters above those feature Tommy's daddy on the fiddle.

I dunno - that "Logan County Blues" doesn't appear on any of Tommy's recordings that I have. And I will say, it doesn't sound like Tommy, but that don't mean it ain't. What a great tune! I can see now what i'll be doing the rest of the evening!

That Logan County Blues is probably Fred. It sounds like his fiddle playing, plus it sounds like Fiddle and guitar, if there is banjo, I can't hear it. Kyle wasn't a guitar player and neither was Tommy or Fred. It's likely Fred and and some guitar player.

You can hear Fred talking to Tommy at the end Darling Nellie Gray.

Fred Cockerham is a damn fine fiddle player too, and his voice is the shiznitz! If you've never heard him do Little Satchel, remedy that quick!

I never heard Tommy do Casey Jones, that was very sweet.
