no! wait! As you were. I guess they would have started out in 1814 ...
EDIT the British army was led by Major-General Pakenham, who was killed on Jan 8th:

Yeah, we actually got off pretty easy on that whole deal. And the one before that, too.

Here's a version of the tune. Stumbled across a reference to it when I was listening to an interview with Richard Bigger about the Danville tobacco co-ops. There's another really good one about tobacco prices in the 20's.
That kinda stuff yanks directly on my chain - both of my grandfathers were tobacco farmers at the time and would have sold their crop at the Danville market. My maternal granfather stood to it his whole life, which became a little more certain after price stabilization. My paternal grandfather was ruined in a similar fashion to Tommy Jarrell - the last crop he grew didn't bring enough to pay the fertilizer bill so he quit the thing. He went to milling instead of moonshining, though.
All this great Virginia stuff is coming out of the collection at Ferrum College's Blue Ridge Institute. The place is well worth visiting, especially when they have thier Folk Life Festival in late October. The little cabin at the back of the farm there was my great, great, great, granddad's homeplace they took from nearby Thornton Mountain and reconstructed at the Institute.
I couldn't get away from this stuff even if I wanted to. |

I tried kinda hard to hear it, but no luck. It definately ain't what Tommy Jarrell called "Fire on the Mountain". I try not to listen to those Kentucky fiddlers, man. I like keepin' it Virgi-lina style 'round here.

Fire On The Mountain
it's only a clip but i'd love to ear the rest of it. i tried googling and found this great article which links to the same clip of Fire on the Mountain. He's still playing today. he talks about playing with Curly and Jack Shelton who are NOT The Shelton Brothers (Joe and Bob) who recorded Western swing for Decca in the 40s. I've been having fun on the internets  |
