Finally getting around to viewing that, Stu. That's Sweet Sunny South. S'aright. They've played that one, too!
Reminds me to go ahead and start a topic on it. I'll get some general lyric up for it and then refine that to one of the OCMS performances of it. I think a-pope shot a video of one of them - I think maybe Chattanooga.

Nice tune. Switching from the two-finger playing to clawhammer really makes it dynamic. I'll have to remember that trick.

SWEET SUNNY SOUTH

Take me back to the place where I first saw the light
To the sweet sunny south, take me home
Where the mocking birds sing me to rest every night
Oh why was I tempted to roam

I think with regret of the dear home I left
Of the warm hearts that sheltered me there
Of wife and of dear ones of whom I'm bereft
For the old place again I do sigh

Take me back to the place where the orange trees grow
To my cot in the evergreen shade
Where the flowers from the river's green margin do grow
And spread their sweet scent through the glade

Oh the path to our cottage they say has grown green
And the place is quite lonely around
I know that the smiles and the forms that I've seen
Now lie in the dark mossy ground

Take me back, let me see, what is left that I knew
Can it be that the old house is gone
Dear friends of my childhood indeed must be few
And I must face death all alone

But yet I'll return to the place of my birth
Where the children have played round the door
And they gathered wild blossoms that grew round the path
That'll echo our footsteps no more

Take me back to the place where my little ones sleep
Where old massa lies buried close by
O'er the graves of my loved ones I long for to weep
And among them to rest when I die

The above lyrics are from a recording of the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers from 1962. Garcia played it pretty much every night of his Garcia & Grisman tour in the late fall of '91, which is where I first heard the tune. While the New Lost City Ramblers released a version in 1962 that likely inspired Jerry to add this tune to the Hog Stompers set, I would pretty much guarantee that Jerry first heard this from the Charlie Poole source (May, 1929). I think Jerry was pretty well-schooled in Poole. Da Costa Woltz's Southern Broadcasters recorded it in 1927 and is the earliest recording that I know of - spot on with above lyrics, except in the last. And these lyrics aren't really different, it's just the singer "flubs" the line on the recording - seems like they'd have done another take. You can hear it on You Ain't Talkin To Me: Charlie Poole and the Roots of American Music, which you should have in your library. Tommy Jarrell's father Ben played fiddle in that band.
The song, as with many of these "Afro-centric" tunes like Dem Golden Slippers, goes back to perhaps the late 1870's/ early 1880's. Some sources say it is Civil War period, but that's just not correct.
I'll throw up some chords later unless Stu beats me to it.
