Since our first trip to Nashville is going to be for the New Years show, my girlfriend and I were curious what things would be best to do while we're there. Any recommendations by you Nashvillians or anybody who just loves the city would be much appreciated.

I know others will post lots of things eventually. You obviously will want to take the walk down 2nd street and Broadway and all the little venues. There is the old "16th Avenue" that the song was made famous for (the lyrics are quite accurate as sung by Lazy J Dalton:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsbmrqfQDco&feature=fvsr

I believe that was (is) referred to as Music Row, but I don't really have the history (16th & 17th Avenues are named "Music Square" East and West, respectively at Demonbreun as you go south down 17th and back up 16th north).

Of course before the NYE show you will want to eat at Jacks BBQ on Broadway, BUT go early. There will be lots of fans there, and frequently you'll find a band member or two.

Parking is only $4 under the public library building on weekends and after 5pm. That is on Commerce Avenue between 6th and 7th streets. Enter off of 6th coming down from Church Street or on 7th going up from Commerce. It's the cheapest parking in down after hours.

Lots of places to eat: "Rotiers" for some of the best burgers and other sandwiches in town (Near Elliston Place & 25th on Elliston); "Knoshville" a delicatessen with some of the greatest deli food in Nashville (near 20th and Broadway on Broadway); I use to go to "Merchants" on the corner of 4th and Broadway but it has changes ownership and I'm not impressed right now.;Demos Steak and Spaghetti House (3rd and Commerce on 3rd); Upscale "Capitol Grill" 6th & Church on 6th Street; and many more....

Be sure and come a day early or stay a day late and go to the Station Inn for some Bluegrass (on the corner of 12th and Pine St). Check their schedule.

Have fun,
Barry

I would only add Prince's Hot Chicken as a must-get. Off of Dickerson Road, north side of town. Look for the line out the door.

if you like bronze neekid people (and who doesnt), go see the statue of bronze neekid people, MUSICA.

"Musica is a bronze statue unveiled in 2003 that sits in a grassy knoll at the center of a traffic rotary where Division Street meets 17th Avenue South (known as the Music Row Roundabout or Buddy Killen Circle) across from the Owen Bradley Park in the Music Row area of Nashville, Tennessee. It was built as part of an urban renewal project for the Music Row neighborhood."

If you like bronzey stuff I'd also recommend checking out the exterior of the public library a few blocks from the Ryman - neat little panels depicting all kinds of critters. Neat WPA stuff.

That's why I don't hang out there when I'm in Nashvegas. It's the whole "grassy knoll" thing that gets me... Very Happy

hey Nashvillians...I think we are arriving the 30th and looking for something to do that night. Places to eat? Any shows not to be missed? General places to get our groove on?

Also, because I'm a super geek...any places the academic in me might be interested in...sites of "urban renewal projects" (read: sites of gentrification) or interesting historical sites that may not be on the tourist map?

Thanks for any help!

How about some Deja Vu? Playing the 30th at the Station Inn, Chuck Mead and the Grassy Knoll Boys.

you know Rodge, I've been waiting quite a while for your promise of Nashville goodness. I'm not saying I'm mad about your lack of following through on your promise, I'm just disappointed. Wink

I just told Scot last night that we are going to totally hit Prince's Hot Chicken. I went to a place like that in Memphis... and I don't eat mass produced fried chicken but it was ssssoooo good. Plus, I like any place that lists 4-s on the menu and I can get out of there with a belly full of tasty grub AND a beer for under $8!

Also interested in really good local breakfast places. I love breakfast. We went to the pancake house last year and it was good but the wait - - whew! I don't know if it was THAT good.

I think my almost-vegetarianism may be taking a break over New Years.

There's saying no to school chicken wings, then there's Southern barbecue. Shocked

I'm only human, dear sweet Chickens.

Tucky, I'll get back to you on buses (waiting to get paid) but if you want me to get to Richmond in the pre-dawn hour, I think that can be swung. In case of Chuck Mead or other reasons to get to Tennessee earlier...

In a perfect world, we're there in time to catch the show and hit Prince's afterward (they keep late hours).

wow! that's quite a list! Station Inn has been on my short list (will need to talk my travel partner into this...after 15 or more hours in the car, I'll be up for it be she may not)...perhaps we'll see some of you there.

What about Tin Angel for food? I've heard good things about it and thought I'd check it out...

Also, how bicycle friendly (or not) is Nashville? We've been contemplating bringing our bikes...in case of taxi (or $$) shortages

Smile

Thanks again!

glad to see you are coming from minneapolis, thats quite a haul but it will be worth it as nashville is an awesome city and you are in for an even better time at the show!

as far as biking goes, its not the most bike friendly city but its def do able! if you can withstand the cold (which im assuming you can being from the north) you should have no problems riding to the ryman downtown. just be careful of drunk drivers!

Ok, go to the Honky Tonks if you like the songs Sweet Home Alabama or Jackson... I swear I walked down the street there once and heard Sweet Home Alabama played out of at least 4 of those bars at the same time.

Tin Angel is great! Their eggplant is really good! Place is a lil more high dollar than the other places I wrote down. I can come up with a more fine dining list ifn ya want?

not too bike friendly, eh? Hmmmm...I'll see how adventurous I feel when the time comes...although, I'm hard pressed to think of a time I regretted having my bike Wink

one higher dollar meal is prob all can afford this trip, so I think its gotta be Tin Angel.

I am ridiculously excited about this trip...so much so that my day dreaming about it is distracting me from my school work...

Seriously, thank you for all the "insider" info...this is so great!
