Great last show of the year here in Raleigh. The show was sold out - and we had a great spot at the end of the balcony on comfy seats. We were the first folks in the door AND had early seating - whoo whoo!!
Older crowd, which was interesting but everyone was into it. Low Anthem canceled so they could play at the opry, but we had Skeedaddle open. I would listen to them again. Reminded me of the Two Man Gentlemen Band with five gentlemen and one woman - - and songs weren't quite as risque.
Anywho - a couple of thing happened last night that made me think Justin is leaving the group and wondering if anyone else knows anything? 1) Dom was introducing a song and then ah nah... let's let Justin play Georgia Buck one last time. Then later... Justin sang a really poignant song/poem by himself acapella. He said it was for the band and was looking at Rhiannon and Dom the whole time. It was about love and support for going your own way but still remaining friends and making tough decisions but sticking to them.
Justin was choking up, heck I was choking up! But Dom and Rhiannon seemed unphased. And there was no announcement about him leaving. Just seemed strange.
Anyone hear anything or know anything? |

Dang. And I had to be sick... ugh. Justin is my favorite of the Chocolate Drops. It was so hard to miss that, now I'm kicking myself for not being there. The unused ticket sits right next to me. |

Well - hopefully it is just some end of the year - long roads traveling - lamenting and thinking out loud. I truly hope I was reading into it!!
One of the guests was what Scot and I called the Beatboxin' Jew. It was this guy from Brooklyn, Adam, that was doing some beatboxing on some of the songs. One was Snowden's Jig - and I have a vid of that. I love the fiddle - so haunting! |

Well Bean (and everyone else, too) I am sad that my hunch was correct. I personally didn't enjoy Adam's additions much except on Hit en Up Style. I prefer a real jug any day to a beat boxer. But we shall see.
The good news it that Justin's new project is based right here in Durham.... so more chances to see him! And Bean - notice that 2/19 date at Motorco? Right across from my fave brewery in downtown Durham....... I will see what I can find out so you can get your Justin fix. |

You are welcome Mr. Gumbo.
And Kitty, we should definitely try and see that show. Looks like it is at 8:00 and only $7. Not so sure about the other performers though, so it would be nice to know when Justin is playing. |

Oh. And can I say how sad I am to have been too sick to drive down for that show now! I still have my unused ticket pinned up on my wall where I put tickets so I don't lose them. |

Well - I have heard one other band on the bill and they are NOT my cup of tea. I think my cat sings better. They are listed first - so I don't know if that means they will play first. I will dig around and try to find out before then. |

I Justin is selling the EP he is advertising, I would love to get a copy. Willing to pay for it and shipping (and a bit extra for the trouble) if someone can pick one up. |

Saw the CCDs in London last night and was blown away. Entertaining and diverse. I never saw them when Jason played with them, but the two new additions to the line-up, Hubby Jenkins and Leyla McCalla on cello were both superb. The gig was at the English Folk Dance & Song Society so the audience was a little older and staider, but they nearly brought the house down with Hit 'em up Style and Cornbread & Butterbeans. Highlight of the night has to be Rhiannon singing a song in Gaelic. Sublime. Also, the title track from the new album, Leaving Eden positively brought a tear to my eye!

Ha! Yes, I was a little sceptical of that addition. This line up is good and I'd love them to hang onto the cellist - I thought she really brought something special. Got the feeling she was just a guest, but I might be wrong! |

From what I understand, he is still in the band. He's just unable to tour right now for whatever reason,
I'm pretty sure Layla is on the album, and she is a member as well.
Layla used to play with Morgan O'Kane. |

I feel like I will catch flack for saying this, BUt let me start by saying I love old Traditional Blues/folk/appalachian music ( especailly Blues) I have enough recordings from the 1920's and 30's that Harry Smith's anthology is a foot note to me. I don't like CCD, If they were white, like most modern purveyors of trad forms, instead of being the rare instance were young black people were upholding their proud tradition, they would be considered Mediocre at best. I wanted to like them, I really did, people were always trying to turn me on to them, assuming I would like them. They are just incredibly bland. And I really think most people just like the idea that some young black folks took up the tradition. I liked the idea too, until they bored me to death. |

It would be a strange world indeed if we all liked only the same things. And there are times when the Chocolate Drops don't bring the fire, but mostly I love their stuff. (And not because of the way they look either )
I am usually a stickler for (if not tradition then) authenticity, but of course i'm an outsider to the tradition and have to make up some idea of what I think fits. So some bands leave me cold and others seem right. There aren't many that fall in between, though. The Chocolate Drops experiment some and sometimes that doesn't work for me. The point is that even though some stuff doesn't work for me it doesn't spoil the excitement I get from the stuff that does work. And there's lots of that. |
