Been trying to figure this one out for awhile but for some reason I just can't seem to get it. I know that there is a Dm in there and it goes to a quick hit on the F chord.
Also it seems to be set up like a standard fiddle tune with the repeating A and B parts, the lyrics however don't fit this pattern.

(hey, my 50th post, I'm Raisin A Ruckus now boys)

A late arriving UK fan of OCMS this seems to work for me for the sung bits of Hard To Tell...

Verse:
[D]Now the way things look around this town
Better [F]find a pretty woman before the sun goes down
If you [D]need a place to lay your head
Better [F]find a pretty woman in a [C]pretty big [D]bed

Chorus:
Its [D]hard to tell, hard to tell
You [F]gotta get a woman its [C]hard to [D]tell
Cant be sure, cant be sure
Is [F] she gonna be your [C]pretty little [D]girl
Your [C]pretty little girl

but I see what you mean about Dm for the fiddle solos.

Try this:

Verse:
[Dm]Now the way things look around this town
Better find a pretty woman before the sun goes down
If you need a place to lay your head
Better find a pretty woman in a pretty big bed

Chorus:
[Dm]Its hard to tell, hard to tell
You gotta get a woman its hard to tell
Cant be sure, cant be sure
Is she gonna be your pretty little girl

Alternately you can play the chorus like this, with a quick C, but there is no F:

Chorus:
[Dm]Its hard to tell, [C]hard to tell
[Dm]You gotta get a woman its hard to tell
Cant be sure, [C]cant be sure
[Dm]Is she gonna be your pretty little girl

Agree about it basically being Dm but there still seems to me to be variation on the normal guitar Dm [XOO231] when I play along. Might it be the Dm varient [XO3231] is what I was hearing as F and even maybe Dm7 [XOO211] might be what I thought were C's. What do you think?

I think what it's doing on the second part of the instrumental breaks between verses is:

1-----2-----3----4----1----2----3----&----4
Dm Dm Dm F | Dm Dm Dm C Dm

thanks for that - it's how it sounds to me too there jkorp!

I just saw this - it's the best shot of what Willie is doing that i've seen - view it in full screen

EDIT
from the beginning of this

i'd say Willie is in drop D tuning - you can hear that low D note as he tunes in at 12 seconds into the vid
