I was born in England, raised in France
They'd send the coathanger, wouldn't send the pants
Chorus:

Or can I get you now or must I hesitate?
I was raised in Alabama, born in Tennessee
Don't you like my peaces don't you shake-a my tree

If the river was whiskey and I was a duck
I'd dive to the bottom boys I'd never come up

Got no woman boys the blues got me
(Chorus)
If the river was whiskey and the branches were wine
You could see me at the ---- any old time

It's peaches no doubt. A very cliche line. Hey and what happened to all the old lyrics because I had already done this song.

I've had a Sam Collins collection for a while now and was just surprised to hear this in there. A distinctive falsetto.
anyone got the words? - it's a brain burner |

After extensive relistening and web crawling, I came up with a few minor revisions. Like an addition of "Oh," before "They'd send the coathanger" and "So" before "If the river was whiskey". Also an exclusion of the word you from "don't you shake-a my tree. Instead of "Tell me how long, must I wait," I heard, "Tell me how long, have I got to wait,". And last but not least, when it is suggested that "You could see me at the --- any old time," I deciphered "You could see me out floatin any old time". My version of Hesitation Blues is from their Eutaw album, I don't know if they have produced any other versions at this time. Thank you. |

hmm - you get the 'obsessive of the week' badge
what do you hear before "Got no woman, boys .." I'm sure there's something in there too.
I hear vine rather than wine in that last verse but good call on the floating line!
And yes Eutaw is the only version i have
EDIT have you heard the 11 minute version by Rev Gary Davis? He has such a lovely way of presenting the verses. Very funny! |

much as i like the coathanger line i think it's
"ought to send the coat and they wouldn't send the pants"
and i don't hear 'you could' on the 'floating' line so .... |

Capo 2nd
Intro (inst chorus): C G D G
G
I was born in England, raised in France
Ought to send the coat and they wouldn't send the pants
Chorus:
C______________________G
Tell me how long have I got to wait
________D____________________G
Or can I get you now, must I hesitate?
I was raised in Alabama, born in Tennessee
Don't you like my peaches don't shake-a my tree
(Chorus)
If the river was whiskey and I was a duck
Dive to the bottom boys I'd never come up
(Chorus)

y'all could take some clues from the original source:
IF THE RIVER WAS WHISKEY
If the river was whiskey and I was a duck
I'd dive to the bottom and I'd never come up
If the river was whiskey and the branch was wine
You could see me in bathin' just any old time
I was born in England raised in France
Oughta send the coat and they wouldn't send the pants
I was born Alabama I was raised in Tennesse
You don't like my peaches don't shake my tree
I looked down the road just as far as I could see
A man had my woman and the blues had me
I ain't no doctor but the doctor's son
I can do the doctor til the doctor comes
Got the hesitation stockings the hesitation shoes
Believe my lord I got the hesitation blues |

only if you credit it, tho ....
and the clues could still lead you wrong - - i definitely don't hear bathin' on the Eutaw version |
