Finally figured this out. Chords with a capo on 2nd fret so it's in D
The verse part repeats and then the chorus part repeats.

(C) Old Joe (Am) woke up at a quarter to (C) five

Cause the girls needed (Am) milkin' or else they go (C) dry

And he'd done it for (Am) 45 years so it was no (C) surprise

Til He went (Am) outside and seen that (G) heart up in the (C) sky

It shined like a quarter in a baby's hands

On the fourth of July near the Rio Grande

It shined like a diamond in a jar of sand

And it made Joe's cornfield look like it was born again

And I'd put my (F) heart up in the (C) sky

And I'd (F) pushed it way up (C) high

I just (F) wondered (G) what the (Am) people'd (F) do

When they'd (C) see that (Am) heart up (G) there in the (C) blue

I'd put my heart up in the sky

I can't really tell you why

I just wondered what the people'd do

When they'd see that heart up there in the blue

AND this verse goes:

And there was a (G) doctor called into (F) town
That (C) showed up in a Chevy with a (G) black bag and a frown
Who said there wasn't (G) nothing you can do to (F) bring that heart back down
Cause it was a healthy (C) heart (Am) that Old Joe (G) found

Full Lyrics Here

When Critter sang it in 07 it ended with a chorus after the Healthy Heart line. So there were no FBI involved that time.

Originally a Ketch and Critter song from 97 (ie pre- old Crows), but as far as I can make out we're still not quite sure who wrote it, but likely Ketch. More info in the Archive

AND if you haven't heard it then Dean caught it for posterity over at YouTube

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Ketch wrote this one - and sang it originally...
Thanks for plotting it out, Stu...

HEART UP IN THE SKY - (K & C version)

Old Joe woke up
At a quarter to five
‘Cause the girls needed milking
Lest they go dry
They’d done it for forty-five years
So it was no surprise
But when he went outside, he seen that heart up in the sky

Well it shined like a quarter
In a baby’s hands
On the Fourth of July
Near the Rio Grande
It shined like a diamond
In a jar of sand
And it made Joe’s cornfield look like it was born again

And I put my heart up in the sky
And I pushed it way up high
I just wondered what the people‘d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
I put my heart up in the sky
I can’t really tell you why
I just wondered what the people’d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue

Well he reached for his heart
Like to have him a stroke
And he called for his wife
Who thought it was just some kind of joke
Like when he called the preachers up
‘Cause the hens layed triple yolks
But up in the sky was a heart that was taller than an oak

It was forty feet up
And it was ten feet wide
It was pumping like a madman
Swept up in the tide
And when his wife came out from the inside
She fell to her knees
And she almost died

And I put my heart up in the sky
And I pushed it way up high
I just wondered what the people‘d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
I put my heart up in the sky
I can’t really tell you why
I just wondered what the people’d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue

Well the first thing they did
Was get the paper on the wire
And they had their son paged
He was a contracter-for-hire
And they called their estranged daughter
She fell in love with a man from the Ozark mire
And a bus rode up with the entire First Presbyterian choir

And there was a doctor
Called in from town
Who showed up in Chevy
With a black bag and a frown
Who said there wasn’t nothin’ to bring that heart on down
‘Cause it was a healthy heart
That old Joe’d found

And I put my heart up in the sky
And I pushed it way up high
I just wondered what the people‘d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
I put my heart up in the sky
I can’t really tell you why
I just wondered what the people’d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue

Well the people gathered ‘round
And they sang their songs
And the preachers and the sinners
They all writ their wrongs
And they stayed up for that all night long
‘Cause that beatin’ heart
It was just like a burnin’ sun

But it didn’t last long
And I’ll tell you why
‘Cause the word spread wide
And they sent out the FBI
And every pretty girl in Missouri and all their sweethearts cried
The day they shot that heart
Out of the clear blue sky

And I put my heart up in the sky
And I pushed it way up high
I just wondered what the people‘d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
I put my heart up in the sky
I can’t really tell you why
I just wondered what the people’d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue

Well I was four counties over
When I looked up and I saw
And I trailed that military truck
All the way to Utah
And me and my sisters
And an old gray Choctaw
We stole back that heart
From the heartless law

And I put my heart up in the sky
And I pushed it way up high
I just wondered what the people‘d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
I put my heart up in the sky
I can’t really tell you why
I just wondered what the people’d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
If they seen my heart up there in the blue

Nope -- it was, in fact, "an oak"... Didn't catch your link to Molly Bea's interp the first few times...
At least we both got "Joe's cornfield"!!!

Per wikipedia:
The Choctaw are a Native American people originally from the Southeastern United States (Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana). They are of the Muskogean linguistic group. The word Choctaw (alternatively spelt as Chahta, Chactas, Chato, Tchakta, and Chocktaw) may derive from the Castilian word chato, meaning flat; however, noted anthropologist John Swanton suggested that the name was derived from a Choctaw leader.[2] Henry Halbert, a historian, suggests that their name is derived from the Choctaw phrase "Hacha hatak" (river people).[3] The Choctaw were a part of the Mississippian culture which was located throughout the Mississippi River valley. The early Spanish explorers of the 16th century encountered their ancestors.[4] In the 19th century, Choctaws were known as one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" because they had adopted and integrated numerous cultural and technological practices of their European American colonial neighbors. The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians are the two primary Choctaw associations, although smaller Choctaw groups are located in Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas.

So, no Choctaws in Utah.

I had assumed it was Utah because this was written long before Eutaw held any significance for the OCMS, and the fact that there are all kinds of federal lands and military insallations out west (think Area 51, but that one of course is not in Utah). I was also imagining them wrangling that heart from the "heartless law" and stealing it away not with some old gray Choctaw Indian, but with an old Army helicopter of the same name - the paint scheme on the Choctaws used by the Army was in gray.

"Only from the heart can you touch the sky" -Rumi

I found this in one of my textbooks today and immediately thought of this song. That's all. Smile

I caught my 3 year old singing this in the bathtub after listening to it in the car with me. A proud dad moment!
