BOOTLEGGER'S BOY

I was born and raised
A bootlegger's boy
In the Cherokee hills
I plied my trade
In Mountain City
I had me a time
Just a-makin' money
On the corn moonshine

Well I hauled my load
Into Knoxville town
I met me a girl
And we knocked around
Well them Knoxville girls
Couldn't leave me alone
With my suit so fine
And my bottle of corn

I'm goin' back to Mountain City
So I can make another run
Load my trunk with my moonshine whisky
I am a brave bootlegger's son

Well I sold that corn
To the circuit judge
On the public square
To many a tramp
Well I met with trouble
On the tracks one night
With a drunken man
I commenced to fight

We fought five rounds
Then I put him away
With a wicked jab
From a razor blade
How the women screamed
And the bottles broke
On the stony ground
Where the blood did flow

I'm goin' back to Mountain City
The deed I done they'll never know
I killed a man in a fuel of whisky
I am a rude bootlegger's boy

Now I hang my head
Just to hide my shame
Lost all my money
Can't find a friend
I'm gonna drag my bones
To the mountainside
If the corn don't kill me
I might never die

I'm goin' back to Mountain City
Or else they'll hang me this I know
Goin' home broke, ain't it a pity
I am a _____ ____ ____ _____ _____
I'm goin' back to Mountain City
In the Cherokee hills I started from
Goin' home broke, ain't it a pity
Lord curse this rude bootlegger's son

Nice work.

Just thought I'd add for the album version that the chorus after he kills the guy by the train tracks (at least to my ear) is:

I'm goin back to Mountain City
Gonna make the revenuers run
I killed a man in a feud of whiskey
I am a cruel bootlegger's son.

I always heard it "field of whiskey".

I still like that better. Like the character can only see things in terms of moonshine, and he kills him in a wheat/rye field.

IMO I think its:

"I killed a man, in a fued over whiskey"

Which is very slick!

First off, great job with the forum, to those that are contributors. It's an incredible resource, not just for a band, but for those interested in what Frank Fairfield calls 'people's music' (cribbed from a You Tube video of Fairfield's called Unheard Of and Forgotten Abouts).

I post rarely but have made my way through a fair bit of this site in recent history chasing lyrics, fiddle tunings, song origins, etc.

I saw the Crows in Toronto July 2011 and going to the show with my fellow musician friends was an experience insofar as experiencing what kind of energy they bring night in, night out. They're incredibly special that way. Also saw Morgan, Wille and Ketch back up Gill and Dave as the DRM in Chicago December 2010. A big highlight. I'm now in Revelstoke BC, Canada, in the mountains, taking part in the old-time/folk music culture that exists here.

But I digress.

Bootlegger's Boy corrections/interpretations, building off of pittsyltucky's (or *Johnny*?) initial version, updated with Mr Skjellyfetti's corrections, referencing the studio album, with some trifling changes.

OCMS - Bootlegger's Boy

I was born and raised
A bootlegger's boy
In the Cherokee hills
I plied my trade
In Mountain City
I had me a time
Just a-makin' money
On moonshine

Well I hauled my load
Into Knoxville town
I met me a gal
And we knocked around
Well them Knoxville girls
Can't leave me alone
In my suit so fine
And my bottle of corn

I'm goin' back to Mountain City
Where I can make another run
Load my trunk with moonshine whisky
I am a brave bootlegger's son

Well I sold that corn
To the circuit judge
On the public square
To Mayor Trent
Well I met with trouble
On the tracks one night
With a drunken man
I commenced to fight

We fought five rounds
Then I put him away
With a wicked jab
From a razor blade
How the women screamed
And the bottles broke
On the stony ground
Where the blood did flow

I'm goin' back to Mountain City
Gonna make the revenuers run
I killed a man in a feud of whisky
I am a cruel bootlegger's son

Now I roam at night
Just to hide my shame
Lost all my money
Can't find a friend
I'm gonna drag my bones
To the mountainside
Cause if the corn don't kill me
I might never die

I'm goin' back to Mountain City
Or else they'll hang me this I know
I killed a man in a feud of whisky
I am a cruel bootlegger's boy

I'm goin' back to Mountain City
In the Cherokee hills I started from
Goin' home broke, ain't it a pity
I am a cruel bootlegger's son (or Lord curse this rude bootlegger's son)

Capo on 2

G C G (repeat ad infinitum) - occasionally the rhythm will change, such as at "them knoxville gals" - hold the G and switch to the C at "gals" and then go back to the usual rhythm

then, at the end of the chorus:
G C D G
I am a brave bootlegger's son
