Ever since I heard it, this has been my favorite version by far. Something about the rough production, small variations from the "standard" lyrics, and (of course) the steel guitar really does it for me.
I know a lot of people who hate it though, saying that the steel guitar sounds "like cheesy country" or that it just doesn't sound "right" (I've even had people not believe me that it's not someone else's cover).
So, two questions...
A) What do you guys think of this version?
B) Have they played it like this live recently/ever? I'd kill to hear it like this live, although I'm sure a lot of people would be disappointed that it doesn't sound like it "should."

"Well, folks, this is that time of the evening. When we gotta say goodnight, we gotta pack up that truck and head back to Roanoke. And it's many a mile we've travelled together, many an ocean we've crossed. And I just wanna say...I just wanna say Ooh."
But yeah, the slide version is fun. Great vox from Ketch. |

I believe there was mention of them recording "I Told a Lie to My Heart" with him as well, but I'm not sure what happened to that, or maybe they just played it with him during the recording session for Troubles.

According to the liner notes it was Kevin's brother Steve on the electric guitar.
Quote:
What makes this tune so hot is Don Helms, yes THE Don Helms playing steel. And that's Kev's brother Steve on electric guitar.

I don't like it as much. Not sure why. I guess I just miss the banjo and could do without the steel guitar. |
