CARRY ME BACK TO VIRGINIA

Up from the Valley, I'm a rebel boy
Born on the banks of the Shenandoah
When in '61 I went to the War
To win one for Virginia

My brother went first then they called me, too
I was green as clover in the mornin' dew
So I marched to the drum while the band played the tune (...we sang to the tune)
Carry me back to Virginia
Fire in the cannon, water in the well
Race through the Valley with a rebel yell
I learn't right quick how to march like hell
And fix that bayonet....
Won't you carry me back
Won't you carry me back...
Carry me back to Virginia

With our swords in the saddle, powder in the gun
We thought for a minute our fight was done
So we all lined up with our medals on
'Til they hammered us into the quick-sand
Then they burned that Valley with a blaze of fire
Cut through the lines like a red-hot iron
So we ran for cover with the horses piled and
Shivered in the cold against them
But the war raged on like the flames of hell
We dug from the pockets of the ones that fell
Dressed in rags and we ate like rats
When they cut off our legs we cried...
Won't you carry me back
Won't you carry me back...
Carry me back to Virginia
Won't you carry me back
Won't you carry me back...
Carry me back to Virginia

Well we died in the Valley and we died in the swamps
Died in the woods where the whitetails jump
On our sides on the stretchers, on our backs in the field
In the belly of the wagon where our wounds were healed
We died in the hospitals, starved in the camps
Locked in the prisons so mean and rank
And we spilled our blood in the fight to defend
The ven'rable soil of Virginia
Down in Alabama
Down in Caroline
Way down in Georgia on the Tennessee line
We fought for the rebels and Robert E. Lee
And we wanna go home to Virginia
I said we wanna go home to Virginia...
Won't you carry me back
Won't you carry me back...
Carry me back to Virginia
Won't you carry me back
Won't you carry me back...
I wanna be buried in Virginia

Key of D. If you can play the Cumberland Gap, then this one should be "learn't right quick".
I got a couple of gripes with a branch-of-service inconsistency and then the Alabama and Georgia thing really screws up the accuracy.
Even so, that Ketcham has writ one hell of a patriotic Southron tune. Come on and lay this one on the Southern Capital, son. Love!

That is powerful stuff. It's nice of you to allow Ketch some poetic license.

I particullarly enjoy this song when Ketch and Critter played it during their tour back in Winter 12'. The emotion carries it a bit farther in me.
