Got this message via email tonight in regards to the upcoming Dave Rawlings Machine Tour. We have tickets for the November 24th show in Carrboro.
"Featuring members of Gillian Welch, Punch Brothers, Led Zeppelin, and a former member of Old Crow Medicine Show, the Fall 2013 Machine will provide a night of distinctive picking, high lonesome songs, and many other fine acoustic entertainments."
Can't help but wonder if the "former member" is good ol' Willie Watson! |

I'd say that's a REALLY good guess! |

So its Willie Watson, John Paul Jones(?), a Punch Brother(name?), and obviously Gillian. |

Confirmed - - it is Willie Watson! Yippee!!
I head somewhere that it was John Paul Jones, but don't recall where. Not too sure about the Punch Brother... but guessing Gabe Witcher (fiddle) or Noam Pikelny (banjo). But more likely Gabe as he toured with them previously. Chris Thile was just here last week - - had tickets but had to give them up because I wasn't in town. |

AMAZING show in Knoxville at the Bijou. They were a little unsure in the first set because they said they hadn't prepared...but you couldn't tell!
"Will the Circle be Unbroken" opened. In between was Method Actor, Cortez the Killer, Sweet Tooth, This Land is Your Land (with I Hear Them All), Going to California, Miss Ohio, Ruby, The Weight, Midnight Special and that's about all I remember! Oh yeah Willie played "Keep it Clean" and I gotta say, I love him by himself, I saw him play this song at BR&R but it was really awesome with some other instrumentalists--especially Dave.
2 or 3 encores. The crowd loved them. We wanted another but I saw Gillian mouth "I'm done" to the soundboard.
Great show!! I'll try to post a pic. |

We ended up making it to the Atlanta show. It was only the 2nd show on the tour and they claimed they were rusty. But, I didn't see any rust... except DR flubbed some lyrics/missed an intro. That just made it better! I heard one of the security guards saying it was the most crowded non-weekend show he had ever seen at the Variety Playhouse. So, that has to be a good sign. I'm glad I made it!
Seeing Willie again was 50% happy 50% sad, especially on the Old Crow songs. Anyway, it was great to see him again. I wish I could have hung around afterward, but it was a school night. |
