Or a trip to California? It has been way too long.

Just back from seeing the Hacks in Utrecht, NL and Tilburg, NL. Wow!!

I finally got to see them live in Germany last year, after somehow always missing them when they were over, and couldn't miss them again, so travelled over to the continent.

Two AMAZING shows in the Netherlands!! This lineup really works. Ben and John from the Fox Hunt are now permanent members, and Shiner's back too, and they're sounding great! Tight, great vocals and harmonies, and I'm loving the new songs!!

The album they've released just now is a live one, recorded last May in Kinderdijk, NL, in memory of miller Rene Verkerk, who was killed in an accident at his windmill last February. Friends and family of Rene contacted the boys to see if they might like to play a gig in Kinderdijk during their summer tour in honour of Rene, and this is the result. 50% of the proceeds of the album go to support Rene's daughter Marijn.

Such a great thing to do this! And what a nice touch to support the miller's daughter with this release.

The cd packaging is way cool. All delft blue and white, with little windmills holding the cd and dvd.

The cd contains the following tracks:

Keep it simple
Flora
Blue run
Radio
End times
Oh girl
Parking lot song
Can't catch me
Ruby Pearl
Elzic's farewell
Limousine Lady
Dance around
By and by
Box of pine
We are many
Get in line brother

The dvd contains footage of the boys in Kinderdijk, and the following live tracks:

We are many
Parking lot song
Radio
can't catch me
Ruby Pearl
Box of pine

Also, after having finally caught a couple of gigs in NL, it doesn't surprise me anymore why bands love playing over there so much! Amazing venues, often council-funded or backed/supported, superb sound/equipement, and the sound guys really know what they're doing, and great crowds who are totally into their music! All that made for a couple of brilliant shows.

I think this cd/dvd will be released in the US in March.

The boys should be back in Europe in August, and apparently with a new studio album!! Happy days!

I also met a Simon in Tilburg, but then had to run for the train, so never got to ask if he's the Simon from this board. If he was - it was nice to meet ya!!

I saw the Hacks for the first time in a couple years at the Grey Eagle last week. They were awesome as usual and I was stoked to see them with Sickmen since I have never seen him with them but his songs are some of my favorites. I missed Baby J and Rob a lot though. Really enjoy Rob's songs and me and my wife had gotten to know him pretty good from talking with him after a couple shows at the Down Home.

From a Hackensaw Boys Facebook Post yesterday...

Hello Friends,

2014 is a new year, and the good ship Hackensaw rolls on. Sometimes we find ourselves on the tops of the waves, sometimes the bottom between them, but the ship rolls on.

Thank you to all who made 2013 a great year! Your presence at shows supports us in so many ways! Whether it be at the merch table, the bar, out-back, or in an audience simply flying a smile, a Hackensaw Boys fan's generosity really has a way of making us feel...well...special. Thanks!

The ship rolls on

The spring of 2014 will see a new Hackensaw Boys album! It will find permanent residence in whatever way you take your music! It will make you want to come to shows! We will all hang-out!

The ship will roll on.

2014 will see more lineup changes for the Hackensaw Boys. We have always been blessed and cursed with amazing members that make this band survive. So here’s a nod to the twenty something Hackensaw Boys that have gone, and here’s a nod to the twenty or so yet to come!

We have always been grateful for your support of the "Hackensaw Boys spirit!" Even though the "we" always changes, somehow the "spirit" does not!

And we will keep that true in 2014. There will be some new faces and return of some old faces. As long as we are all smiling, it cannot be too bad, right?

We all do our best in spite of our worst!

See you somewhere!

Ferd, David and Brian

How great would be NYE be with the Hacks opening?

I still love em and hope to see em many more times, but the last couple times were nowhere as good to me as back when Ward, Baby J, and Rob were still around. I never got to see Dave Sickmen with them till about a year and a half ago, and I've always loveed his vocals on Alabama Shamrock and all the rest of his songs, but I miss Ward.

I hear ya. I'm glad Jimmy Steling is back. He's a good dude. The Hackensaw Boys are like the Wu-Tang Clan. Everyone takes a break for a time but come back. I tell ya what though, they haven't lost their sound or became too flashy. They keeps it real. Dirt road, baby!

Pumped to see them next week
