| Are you in London? If it doesn't require too much travel I'd go and relax before starting the new job. It is an early show and with one man on stage it doesn't get too wild. |

at Hardly Strictly this year, there is also a Willie set on the schedule.

Leap Castle has the reputation of being the most haunted place in Ireland, so it seemed like a good place to see Willie Watson and put some ghosts to rest! To give you an idea of the place the room where Willie played was built in the early 1500s with walls so thick you would occasionally find another room inside them. In 1897 a wall adjacent to a disused staircase was opened up revealing a skeleton. Apparently the wall was replaced and the skeleton may still be there. Around this time an oubliette (a sort of a dungeon but only accessible via it's ceiling) was discovered containing the bones of approximately 150 bodies.
Those were the days when you could throw unwanted guests in the oubliette and not worry about the smell!

A few comments. Firstly "What a bloody privilege! Thank you, Willie!"
It was a mesmerising performance and not just because I was sat about four feet away. The whole room stopped breathing for the slower songs, and clapped, cheered and laughed appreciatively at appropriate times. I mention this with glee. Highlights were most of the banjo tunes. Much as i love his guitar playing I loved Willie's banjo picking. As Dave Rawlings says in the CD notes Willie made me forget for a while earlier versions of such long time favourites as James Alley Blues, (Rabbit Brown) Bring It with You (Gus Cannon), Blood In My Eyes (Mississippi Sheiks). He really did stop time and own many of these covers.
Birmingham Mill is a Willie original. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere yet, though I may have missed it.
Coo-Coo Bird: I've harboured a sneaky desire to call this out as a request at my next Old Crow gig. The lines about "build a log cabin ... so that I can see Willie as he goes on by" strike me as profound, ironic and cheeky in that setting. I imagine most Crows would get the reference and some would frown and some would laugh. So I LOVE that Willie is singing them - cracks me up. I meant to tell him afterwards but forgot!
Take This Hammer with it's "Tell him I'm Gone" refrain is similarly a great opener.
Since there was nowhere for Willie to go offstage it's hard to say which were the encores!
It was great to chat afterwards, about recording in Gillian and Dave's studio and about the castle (Willie was happy to be staying elsewhere). The room was meant to hold 60 which means I can't count - I made it 70 and Willie was obviously amongst friends. A real pleasure. I slept nearby. Soundly, and satisfied. |

Saw him in Kilkenny over the weekend, set was pretty much the same. Instead of Billy for the encore he tried out the Mingulay Boat song, which he thought was Irish (it's Scottish, but I didn't have the heart to tell him). He asked everyone to sing along, but I was the only one who knew it. Talked to him after the show where he thanked me for "backing [him] up," and talked abouthow much he enjoyed being In Ireland. Hoping to see him this fall when I'm back in the US, I'm moving down to NC so will try to catch him in Raleigh.
In all, amazing show, and if you have the opportunity go see him! But you didn't need me to tell you that |

hey TAlderson! You're in Ireland! And with good weather, too! I had hoped to make Kilkenny but couldn't get away. Yes definitely a great show. A much needed infusion of old-timey magic. |

Aaaaargh I am so sad I missed his London show in the end :(
We had our festival that weekend, and I was sooo bone tired on the Monday, I literally couldn't move. Spirit willing, and all that.
Hope he doesn't leave it too long til the next trip to the UK. |
