I kind of wish Beyonce was up for Best Folk Album, too. |

It didn't really hit me until yesterday.
A dang Grammy, y'all! It's been a wild trip, friends. |

Thank Goodness it was one of them ignored categories, though. They won't get too fancy on us.
(And was for one of the weaker albums. Cough.) |

I'm happy for them, and Imma let them finish, but
WILLIE WATSON HAD THE BEST FOLK ALBUM OF ALL TIME!
But seriously, I know there's a lot of politicking and such for Grammys, but if you're looking for the best folk album of 2015, my money'd be with Folk Singer, Vol. 1. I liked Remedy but am not as enthralled with it as I am with Live or Carry Me Back, and I also don't think it really qualifies as a folk album. Ketch put it best in the recent KEXP appearance when he said they were a rock band inspired by old time, especially when you consider their last few albums.
Then again, I certainly think they're Grammy-worthy, I just would have put them in the Americana category. Not a big Rosanne Cash fan (who won that category), so I would have put them ahead of her, but hey, the people want what they want.
As a side note, a glance at the "folk" albums nominated this year shows how far that term has gotten away from what I think it should mean, and what it historically means. Folk music is music of the people, separate from "popular" music in that it is mainly played by amateurs and passed down by tradition. Obviously, the past century has monetized folk music, but you still have folk forms coexisting with their more commercial or professional brethren. Bluegrass, country, jazz, and the electric blues all are examples of musics that came from folk forms but are primarily musics that have been developed and popularized by professional musicians, not amateurs. Many took the same path OCMS has taken, starting with traditional rep and slowly turning it into their own music.
Obviously, most people who record and album and get nominated for a Grammy are going to be professionals. But you can be a professional playing a folk form, as many of the folk revivalist singers like Odetta, Dave van Ronk, and Joan Baez were. You can also look to Irish trad, where slickly professional bands like Altan and Dervish still play the same tunes that you'll hear played by amateurs in a pub, while also writing their own in the same style. Only one album nominated this year, Alice Gerrard's, has traditional music (ie, not recently written by professional musicians) on it, and the rest are all singer-songwriters, which is also OCMS' direction of late. I'm not a strict traditionalist or anything, I just think that the term "folk music" is often used interchangeably with "acoustic music," when they can really be very different things. Willie Watson's album was much closer to what I think of as folk music, and I was surprised that he didn't even garner a nomination.
I hope this isn't taken as a criticism of OCMS; on the contrary, I think they're doing great things and I'm hoping to see them again soon. I've been lucky enough to see them three times, all with different lineups, so I've seen them change a fair bit, and I've liked every iteration. But in my mind, Remedy isn't a folk album, at least by my understanding of the word. |

They're not rock, even now. And Carry Me Back was solidly old time (which is why I like it more than Remedy).
But I appreciate the Willie nod.
Good albums, both. Would be better if one could somehow...smush them together. |
