I'm thinking about buying a mandolin between the $150-$250 range and don't really know what I need. Does anybody have any suggestions on a good brand? Also, would you suggest an A-style or F-style mandolin?

Check out musicians friend, they've got a few good deals. I believe that they're associated with Amazon.com now. My brother just bought a mandolin of the site for about $35 and it's a pretty good stater instrument. Of course if you spend the extra money it'll be worth it.

Buying used is also a great option, you'll get alot more for your money. I've bought a few instruments off of ebay and gotten great deals.

As far as A or F models it doesn't really matter, it's more of a personal preference. Overall though it's all about the tone.

Kentucky KM250S.

It has a solid spruce top.

The tuners are decent.

For the money I don't think you can beat it.

Keep in mind that's an all solid wood rig. . .. no laminate. It'd be tough to get cheaper than that all solid. Its possible I'm sure (think used KM250S) but tough.

Anyone interested in the sub thousand range, consider vintage A style Gibsons. . .something that might not have a completely clean finish or perhaps some mods or non original parts. There tone in those bad boys. . .. the paddle head old Gibson A's are tubbier sounding than the "Snakehead" Gibson A's. The Snakeheads are from 1922-1925/6. .. "Loar Era" which is what the "Snakehead" denotes is actually "22-24" however there were still some neacks with the snakehead shaped that had to be used up. . .so you see some 25's. . . I'd venture to say 26 is possible but I wouldn't quote me.

Good luck on your search. My advice is be sure to get a nice solid wood mandolin that will tune up and stay in tune and is set up fairly well. If you are just starting to play you want to get an instument that inspires you to play it, not one that discourages you because it won't stay in tune. . ..
