Hi all,

I am trying to find the OCMS recording of Big Sciota...it is my understanding that it is on an EP called "Troubles Up and Down the Road"...anyone know where I can buy that EP and can you confirm that Big Sciota is on the EP?

I have the lyrics from the previous version of this web site...thanks!!

and I already knew this tune as a traditional fiddle tune about a river in SE Ohio

by the way...what is an EP?...I am clueless...duh!!

Big Sciota is definitely one of my favorite songs that they do. Wish they played it more. Makes a poor ole boy lonesome for a blue eyed gal.

this is not exactly what OCMS sings on the EP called "Troubles Up and Down the Road"...but it's damn close...it is a combo of what was posted on the old OCMS fan site and a chorus "extension" of my own (sorta)...not to blow my own horn but... I like singing the chorus this way vs. the way OCMS does it...as I recall they do not do the second half of the chorus as I have transcribed it below

I really love this tune...it is one of my current obsessions...and although I do not do a strict mimic of OCMS...I do believe that my version is in the "funky stringband" vein of the spirit of OCMS

1st verse:
I've lived by the river all my life
Ain't seen nothing but toil and strife
Can't go home again
Can't go home again

Chorus:
East to west the highway rolls
Lord have mercy on my poor soul
Miss my blue eyed baby-o
My pretty little blue-eyed baby-o

Miss my blue-eyed baby-o
My pretty little blue-eyed baby-o
Miss my blue-eyed baby-o
My pretty little blue-eyed baby-o

2nd verse:
Pretty little girl that I love so well
She's goin to heaven, I'm goin to hell
Can't go home again
Can't go home again

Chorus:

3rd verse:
River's deep and the river's wide
Devil's standing on every side
Can't go home again
Can't go home again

Chorus:

Thanks for your help man. Listening to the "Troubles..." version, this is what I could gather.

BIG SCIOTA

I've lived by the river all my life
Don’t know nothin' but toil and strife
Can't go home again
I can't go home again

Well east and west the highway rolls
Lord have mercy on my poor soul
Miss my blue eyed baby-o
My pretty little blue-eyed baby-o

That river’s deep that river’s wide
Devil stands on every side
Can't go home again
I can't go home again

East and west the highway rolls
Lord have mercy on my poor soul
Miss my blue eyed baby-o
My pretty little blue-eyed baby-o
~~~~Oh, I miss my blue-eyed baby-o
My pretty little blue-eyed baby-o
That pretty little girl I love so well
She go to heaven but I go to hell
Can't go home again
I can't go home again
East and west the highway rolls
Lord have mercy on my poor soul
I miss my blue eyed baby-o
My pretty little blue-eyed baby-o
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~My pretty little blue-eyed baby

~~~~Oh my baby
Did anyone save the one I did before with chords and all? I am too busy now to type it out again.
Does anyone have fiddle tab for Big Sciota? There's a million versions out there, but I really like the OCMS one. I'm pretty new to the fiddle and have been trying to pick it out from the recording, but they play it so damn fast!!
And along the same lines, any fiddlers out there have other songs? I've seen that post a few times but never any good replies. I stumbled on this TablEdit thing that's cool for hearing the tune then seeing the notes. Anyone got any other links or hints for learning songs? I'm pretty much teaching myself for lack of fiddlers in the area.
I've recently taken up the banjo, much to my dear wife's chagrin, and an invaluable resource for banjo players is banjo hangout. Within the past week or so the owner of that site has launched fiddle hangout, which looks very similar to the banjo hangout. It's just getting launched but it looks like the membership is growing by the day. I sure ain't no fiddler, but I head over there on a daily basis to enter the free drawing. The banjo hangout has been giving away a banjo through drawings on a continuous basis for quite a while, and the fiddle side is doing the same thing as well. Details are on each site's home pages. Good luck with the fiddle!
Thanks, I'll check it out!
I'm actually trying to convince my husband to pick up the banjo. I think it's sexy....and I need some one to accompany me. Very Happy He says he's not coordinated enough and he's probably right. It looks difficult to me, and it's probably harder than it looks!
wasn't sure where to throw this, so I figure right here is as good a place as any. Anyways, I would seriously give a great deal to be able to go back in time and have this sort of talent (as well as musical taste) as these kids at the age that they are. Check it out!
Big Sciota done by young-uns
the guys on banjo & guitar have a nice version of Wagon Wheel up also.
That video clip of them chirrens is pretty good. What a heck of a time to be growing up!
But anyway, I was trying to marry up those chords that were posted previously to the tune and can't seem to get it just right. Anyone got any thoughts? Here's what i'm playing:
A..........................................
I've lived by the river all my life
...................................................
Don’t know nothin' but toil and strife
..........................D.
Can't go home again
....E....................A....
I can't go home again
A...............................E................
Well east and west the highway rolls
..................................F#m.......
Lord have mercy on my poor soul
...........................D........
Miss my blue eyed baby-o
....................................A........
My pretty little blue-eyed baby-o
...E..........F#m.........D........A
Hmmm... seems that it sounds more like it's in G when listening to a live version. Same changes as above, but G/C/D/G and G/D/Em/C/G.
This is on my wishlist to hear Rolling Eyes
An Extended Play record got it's name in the 50s when a 45 rpm record (normally containing a song on each side) was released with two songs on each side at the same speed (45 rpm). The earliest one I have is Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock EP. They normally had picture sleeves and some blurb on the back.
NO WAY!!! i was lookin round to find somebodys version of Big Sciota (as seems to be highly regarded by pittsyltucky) and i saw this link and i clicked it and i actually already had this vid in my playlist at youtube, i just didnt know or connect the name of the song. small world i guess.
anybody that didnt click the link before definitely should. even their demeanor or whateverucallit is entertaining. this is what "music videos" should look like. just what i think. (scroll back up for the link, my status still wont allow me to post links)
Yep --- 'tucky's a Sciotey nut alright -- it's just a hot-damn! blazin'! fiddle tune. Rodge, I would say, is no less one.
I just love the lyrics. Every time I hear it makes me remember to times where I've been on along roadtrip and looking forward to get back to my new lady. Gotta love it, man!
They need to play ALOT more than they do. It was great to finally hear it. People ate it up like fruit roll ups!
Can I just say that I can listen to this song for forever? Seriously man, I'm gonna be riding on a cloud when I die and Big Sciota is gonna be echoe'n off the Pearly Gates.
