Does anyone have the lyrics to Little Birdie? If I missed another post, I'm sorry, I didn't see it. I've been listening to Renfro Valley and have really been loving this one! |

here is "A" version
Little Birdie
Little birdie, little birdie
Come and sing me your song
Got a short time to stay here
And a long time to be gone
Rather be in some dark hollow
Where the sun don't ever shine
Than for you to be another man's darling
And to know that you'd never be mine
Little birdie, little birdie
What makes you fly so high
When you know that my true lover
Is a-waiting in the sky
I'm a long way from old Dixie
And my old Kentucky home
Got no father or mother
No place to call my home
Little birdie, little birdie
What makes your head so red
Well, after all that I been through
It's a wonder I ain't dead
Married woman, married woman
Why don't you settle down
Your heart's like the little birdie's
You're flying all around
Little birdie, little birdie
Won't you sing to me your song
You've caused me lots of trouble
You've caused me to do wrong
just google "LITTLE BIRDIE LYRICS" and you can find a bunch of versions of it |

Here's the lyrics for OCMS's KILLER version on Renfro
Little birdie, little birdie
Won't you sing to me your song
Such a short time to be here
And such a long time to be gone
Little Birdie, oh, Little Birdie
Why do you sing so sad
Make me think of the one who left me
Was the best friend I ever had
(inst.)
Little Birdie, oh, Little Birdie
You fly from limb to limb
Fly away to the one who left me
And sing your song to him
Well married woman, oh, married woman
Why don't you settle down
Is your heart like a little birdie
And it keeps you flying around
(inst.)
Little birdie, little birdie
What makes you fly so high
It's because I have a true heart
And I don't care to die - (NO!)
Little birdie, oh, little birdie
What makes your wings so blue
It's because you have gone and left me
And i'm grieving over you
And here's the first version I ever heard of it -- in a way, it was how I was introduced to mountain music --- a small folk project of Jerry Garcia's in 1962 called the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers. The tape I have is allegedly from 6/11/62 in San Carlos, CA. For this number, it's Jerry on banjo, singing solo, and he intros the tune:
"This is a song that was recorded originally by the Coon Creek Girls, whoever they are. And with God's help... the banjo stays in tune... I may be able to..."
Little birdie, little birdie
Come sing to me your song
I've a short time to stay here
And a long time to be gone
Rather be in some dark holler
Where the sun don't never shine
Than to see you some other's darling
And to know you'll never be mine
Little birdie, little birdie
What makes you fly so high
It's because my own true lover
Is waiting in the sky
Little birdie, little birdie
Come sing to me your song
I've a short time to stay here
And a long time to be gone
Of course, those of us who have the Renfro Valley CD know exactly who the Coon Creek Girls are... I wonder if Jerry used to watch John Lair's show in the 50's? |

Here you go...
Ween
Little Birdy (3:30)
oh little birdy (2x)
i saw the little birdy sing
he sang with glee and everything
he sang for spring and he sang for me
and everything was so happy
i don't know why
i want to fly
try to sigh
make me fly
get me high
then the little birdy starts to cry
so happy. |

This song was originally wrote by Ralph Stanley. Great Version of it on Folway's Smithsonian music collection. |

The Stanley Brothers doing this on the 1956 "A Evening Long Ago: Live 1956" is incredible. That album I can't get enough of.
I love when Ralph hits the claw hammer. |
