There is a banjo tuning made specially for this tune:
It's a D tuning: starting with the fifth and going to the first:

F# DF#AD

Most of the song is played between the second and third fret..

good luck
song is also known as 900 miles....Train 45....

(Woody Guthrie fiddles a fine version on on of his Folkways Records)

This is the Wawa version:

Let's go boys ...
Old Reuben's Train

Old Reuben had a train run from Boston to Maine
He couldn't get no letters from his home
well you don't believe he's gone saw the back of that train roll on
900 miles away from home

hoo - woo hoo

well i pawn you my watch i'll pawn you my chain
I'll pawn you my darlings golden ring
well you must have been drunk when you pawned your watch and trunk
for get your little baby out of jail

woman tell me so i'd never railroad no more
I'd sidetrack that train and head right home
if she told me so i'd never moonshine no more
i'd chop down my still and head right home

with my head hanging down ...

Well the hobo said to the bum you got liquor i'd like some
but i couldn't see my mama this a way
no i couldn't see my mama this a way

Ah poor old Reuben had a wreck broke old Reuben's neck
poor body it never has been found
all they found was a head down by the driver's shed
'bout a mile and a half outside town

Oh poor old Reuben ...

Woo - woo hoo
Woo hoooo
