Well, I assume it's the same old timey song familiar to the Appalachians (and elsewhere) that I distantly recall hearing from childhood. I know Bascom Lamar Lunsford did a cut of the song.
Others have done it as well...

After listening to a few versions, it seems to me that the lyrics are more "complete" in the '01 period as opposed to the later (say '05) versions by Old Crow. These lyrics are transcribed from an '01 performance -- i'll have to check the old Baptist Hymnal at my folks' place to see if it's in there. A little research showed that besides BLL's recordings of this one, there is a collection of recordings at the UNC Library of hymns from the Baptist Hymnals c. 1948 that features this song, however, they have not been transcribed.
**Edit** And from the post-song banter, it seems that this one is done in the key of "G"... hope this helps **

| Wow -- bunch of great images in that show. I've seen that closing shot with him playing in front of the fireplace before. I think Bascom is the only lawyer in history that I would actually want to know. Well, maybe him and Patrick Henry. |
