SAIL AWAY LADIES (or - Don't Sheetrock The Patio)
Whenever I get my new hat done
Sail away ladies, sail away
I give the old one to my son
Sail away ladies, sail away
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Sail away ladies, sail away
Hush now baby don't you cry
Sail away ladies, sail away
You gonna be an angel when you die
Sail away ladies, sail away
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Sail away ladies, sail away
I got me a letter from Shiloh town
Sail away ladies, sail away
Told me St. Louis was burnt to the ground
Sail away ladies, sail away
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Sail away ladies, sail away
I chew my tobacco, I spit my juice
Sail away ladies, sail away
I'd love my daughter but it ain't no use
Sail away ladies, sail away
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Sail away ladies, sail away
Oh whenever I get my new hat done
Sail away ladies, sail away
I give the old one to my son
Sail away ladies, sail away
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Don't she rock 'em di-dee-oh
Sail away ladies, sail away
This tune was recorded by Uncle Dave Macon with somewhat different lyrics - it was an OLD song by the time he recorded it. I came across another version recorded in the 50's by Odetta. That one's kinda bluesy, but really good in it's own way. Thanks to Willie for turning me on to it through her version of Chilly Winds.
Both of those recordings use "house" instead of "hat"... I swear Ketch says "hat", and scholarship on 18th-19th century material culture supports it. The lyrical reference of St. Louis burnt to the ground dates to circa 1849. |

Ah! That's where Lonnie Donegan's "Don't You Rock Me Daddy-O" came from!
Number one in the UK in 1957 !
Good one, ~tucky |
