Gill's really become a major song-writing presence which is awesome. The three he cowrote on the new album are some of its best. And he's showing a lot of range - each one of these tunes is totally different. "Steppin' Out", the Old Crows haven't visited that style since - what, 2002? Nice to hear it again.

I was a little wary of Gill at first, maybe got sucked too much into the whole "Critter has been replaced" storyline. He really feels like a core member at this point. Much as I mourn Willie's leaving, I am already looking forward to the next album - first time there will be three strong songwriters contributing. Let's just hope it doesn't take four years this time around!

I agree with mostly everything you've said except...

I didn't mean that as a low blow or anything - how about prolific rather than strong? I always liked Willie's one or two songs.

I think rodge probably means ketch/willie/critter as providing consistently strong songs.

I agree with the intent of your post though - I loved each of Gill's songs this time and am looking forward to hearing what the ketch /critter/landry team comes up with next time once they've had time to hang out and bounce a few ideas back and forth!

haha! One or two songs on each album, rodge. most of the songs on that list are reworkings of old time songs where everyone gets a credit. No disrespect to anyone intended here Wink

Right, seems like everyone has had only one to two true originals per album, if that.

but anyway. We can all agree that Gill is a bad ace.

My top three favorite songs on the album are all Gill's songs. Mississippi Sat Night being my favorite by far. I got a chance to talk to him after the Indianapolis show and tell him that. He was super gracious. He told me that he had Miss Sat Night completely written but didn't have a chorus, of which Ketch finished. Listening to the song knowing that, it seems so obvious.

I was hoping they'd play Genevieve. I'd rather hear that than Mary's Kitchen, if I were to swap one Gill song for another...

I'm guessing it is a song they sang a few times around 05-06 ..."This world can't stay long, baby don't wait too late..."? Just a shot in the dark....

That tune is "This World Can't Stand Long" - which was written by Jim Anglin and then bought and recorded by Roy Acuff.

I doubt that's the one, karl, but I can't think of another, either.

Question

You mean their old bass player? Wink

Ahem YES a Gill album would be most welcome - it's been too long since Piety and Desire.

Looking forward to the album. I see Gill is opening for JTE on a run of shows.
Unfortunately none of those shows are out west.

Unsurprisingly, JTE appears to be visiting several PA cities that aren't Pittsburgh. Surprisingly, they're not Philly either.

And I still haven't seen solo Gill, but I have little hope I ever will.

Is there something going on with Gil? I was reading about a previous show on here (forget which one) and it was mentioned there was no Gil. Now, I just got a Facebook post to promote a show at the Ascend Amphitheater and the picture is Gil free. I'm a little nervous. Confused

Oh dang, the first two new photos on Crowmedicine are also Gill-free.

God is trying to prevent me from hearing "The Warden" the way it is supposed to sound, isn't he? Sad

From his posts on FB, he is promoting his album over in Europe right now. And Bean said he was getting hitched this year, too. So hopefully just taking some time off...

Heard he is taking a leave of absence, just like you said, tour and promote his new solo album and get married and be married for a quite a few months but definitely plans on returning
