Your average hardcore traditional bluegrass fan will tell you in heartbeat that Old Crow is almost anything but bluegrass. And most of those people are close minded as hell and if it don't sound like Bill Monroe singing about his lost milk cow then they won't give it a chance anyway. Old Crow is more of a roots/americana style old time string band. The closest thing I can think of off the top of my head is the Hackensaw Boys. I'm sure many others on here can give you lots of other suggestions. More along the lines of the newgrass movement, is bands like The Infamous Stringdusters, the Steeldrivers, Blue Highway, Mountain Heart, Cherryholmes and the Gibson Brothers. They are more along the lines of bluegrass but not really old timey bluegrass. Those are just a few of my favs and I'm sure you'll get lots of other great suggestions on here. I love the Avett Brothers a ton and they put on one of the best shows you'll ever see but they fall into their own category. |
