Here's some songs that Ketch and Critter used to play in the days just before the Old Crow Medicine Show formed.

DO-RE-MI

Now every Tom, Dick and Larry
Every Suzie, Sal’ and Sherri
Got a one-way ticket on a Greyhound ferry
To the land of the fortune and fame
They come from all over this nation
Canada and the reservation
Arrivin’ everyday at the bus station
And they all sound the same
And there’s a thousand of ‘em now starvin’ on the music row
Waitin’ for their producer to let ‘em know

Oh, if you ain’t got them Do-Re-Mi, boys
That fit that Nashville hit-single recipe
If you don’t know how to color inside the lines
Send you back to the sticks so you won’t waste our time
Nashville town is the capital of country
With two hundred million listeners in the land of the free
And if you sacrifice your slumber
You can learn to paint by number
And you can sing those Do-Re-Mi

Well now most of these stars they got their start
Drivin’ forklifts for K-Mart
Dreamin’ of the day when they’d leave the trailer park
And they'd be showered in rubies
With book deals, commercials and videos
And a guest appearance at the rodeo
And everybody tells ‘em “place to go is Nashville, Tennessee”
But Nashville ain’t interested in him
He’s got the wrong haircut, he’s too tall and too thin

Oh, if you ain’t got them Do-Re-Mi, boys
That fit that Nashville hit-single recipe
If you don’t know how to color inside the lines
Send you back to the sticks so you won’t waste our time
Nashville town is the capital of country
With two hundred million listeners in the land of the free
And if you sacrifice your slumber
You can learn to paint by number
And you can sing those Do-Re-Mi

Now if I had a band and I thought they’d hire us
So I could be the next Billy Ray Cyrus
Watch out so I don’t catch some virus
When they dump me on the corner of Broadway
It sure does hurt when they treat you like that
And you can’t get a record ‘cause your drummer’s too fat
When you don’t wear the right kind of hat
You’re left standin’ out in the hard rain
And they hire the guy who’s next to you in line
‘Cause his hat is bigger and his teeth are straighter’n mine

Oh, if you ain’t got them Do-Re-Mi, boys
That fit that Nashville hit-single recipe
If you don’t know how to color inside the lines
Send you back to the sticks so you won’t waste our time
Nashville town is the capital of country
With two hundred million listeners in the land of the free
And if you sacrifice your slumber
You can learn to paint by number
So you can sing those Do-Re-Mi

Well Willie Nelson’s records don’t sell
He’s singing songs for Taco Bell
Johnny Paycheck’s sittin’ in his cell
The outlaw’s days are done
There’s a brand-new group of country singers
With teased-up hair and greasy fingers
Catchy songs that only lingers
For a week or so ‘til they’re gone
And don’t it seem like every cheese-ball in the nation
Has got a brand-new single on the radio station

Oh, if you ain’t got them Do-Re-Mi, boys
That fit that Nashville hit-single recipe
If you don’t know how to color inside the lines
Send you back to the sticks so you won’t waste our time
Nashville town is the capital of country
With two hundred million listeners in the land of the free
And if you sacrifice your slumber,
You can learn to paint by number
And you can sing those Do-Re-Mi

Well Marty Stuart’s got jet-black hair
Shania Twain’s in her underwear
Aaron Tippin’s head’s in the air
He thinks he’s got it honest
And country’s women are all sixteen
Their parents push if it ain’t their dream
On the fifth floor they’d all be queens
Still fighting to see who’s the blondest
And every single hot new country star
Would get their asses kicked in a redneck bar

Oh, if you ain’t got them Do-Re-Mi, boys
That fit that Nashville hit-single recipe
If you don’t know how to color inside the lines
Send you back to the sticks so you won’t waste our time
Nashville town is the capital of country
With two hundred million listeners in the land of the free
And if you sacrifice your slumber
You can learn to paint by number
And you can sing those Do-Re-Mi

Well Nashville holds no place for me
And the whole damn State of Tennessee
Revolves around this factory
Producing the perfect song
There’s hundreds of millions of records sold
And they’re bought by young and they’re bought by old
That’s a billion dollars of fool’s gold
Even Hollywood ain’t that strong
And Nashville will keep building their machine
As long as they got plenty of the green

Oh, if you ain’t got them Do-Re-Mi, boys
That fit that Nashville hit-single recipe
If you don’t know how to color inside the lines
Send you back to the sticks so you won’t waste our time
Nashville town is the capital of country
With two hundred million listeners in the land of the free
And if you sacrifice your slumber
You can learn to paint by number
And you can sing those Do-Re-Mi
And if you sacrifice your slumber
You can learn to paint by number
And you can sing those Do-Re-Mi

DUST TO DUST

Heading out east on Highway Thirty-Three
And the hills of West Virginia sure look good to me
The Pendleton County seen in nineteen ninety-eight
Ain’t changed its tune since the War ‘Tween the States
And the ghosts in these hills still rise from their graves
The Senecas, the stone walls, the voices of slaves
And the miners, and the ‘shiners, and the old gas refiners
In the hills of West Virginia, time has stood still

And the past is behind us and we’re sittin’ on top
Of the things that we once knew, but now have forgot
No matter how bright the new age shall burn
Remember that you’re dust, and to dust shall return

So we crossed the Alleghenies on Highway Thirty-Three
And the foothills of Virginia still look good to me
The Rockingham County past old Rawley town (Rawley Springs, VA)
Where the land ain’t changed since the white man cut the timber down
And the Mennonite farmers and the plowboys I’m sure
Say their lives ain’t changed much since the First World War
When the teachers and the preachers and revivalist speakers
Put the fear into the hearts of the man and his land

And the past is behind us and we’re sittin’ on top
Of the things that we once knew, but now have forgot
No matter how bright the new age shall burn
Remember that you’re dust, and to dust shall return

Now we’re in central Shenandoah on Highway Thirty-Three
Where the poultry business does whatever they please
And the old immigrant lab’rers will tell you I’m sure
That their lives ain’t changed much since the Second World War
And the industries moved in and raped all the land
And turned that farmer into a factory man
And the wetbacks and the white trash and the blacks’ shacks on fire
Leave a scar on this land that the man won’t forget

And the past is behind us and we’re sittin’ on top
Of the things that we once knew, but now have forgot
No matter how bright the new age shall burn
Remember that you’re dust, and to dust shall return

Now we’re heading out east on Highway Thirty-Three
And downtown Rock Town is a changed place to see (Harrisonburg, VA)
This used to be the city and the center of the land
Where the people would come in with their wares in their hand
And the straight folks remember twenty years before
When the downtown was boomtown for the Viet-nam War
And the empty shops, vacant lots, unsold crops
Ask you to close your eyes on the past

And the past is behind us and we’re sittin’ on top
Of the things that we once knew, but now have forgot
No matter how bright the new age shall burn
Remember that you’re dust, and to dust shall return

Up past the church where my parents got married
It’s right near the graveyard where the Rebels are buried
You can see them old ways they’re lying cold as a stone
‘Neath the strip malls and the fast foods and the cellu-lar phones
And Highway Thirty-Three it turns into four lanes
It used to be a dirt road, but now things have changed
‘Cause the Wal-Marts and the K-Marts and the twenty-four hour marts
Have given us progress, but look at the cost

And the past is behind us and we’re sittin’ on top
Of the things that we once knew, but now have forgot
No matter how bright the new age shall burn
Remember that you’re dust, and to dust shall return

QUEBECOIS

Well I met ya in the bar down in old St. Ours
The snow was a-creepin’ steady
And out in the street the ice was thick as sheets
And the snow was blowin’ heavy
Across the bound’ry in Franklin County
Haulin’ some wood from down east
Headin’ up to Ottawa my brakes gave out
And I had to push on my feet

Oh, you black-haired Quebecois, let me be your beau Francois
Ce soir, to-night, al-right
Oh, what you doin’ way up here, way across la frontiere
Ce soir, to-night, al-right

I’s a worn-out Yank with an empty tank
When I seen that sign through the snow
It was a little bar called L’Eglise St. Ours
So I figured I had to go
I walked on in and I seen ya grin
And I said “Bon soir, ma belle”
I bought ‘er a drink and I started to think
That she might have a story to tell

Oh, you black-haired Quebecois, let me be your beau Francois
Ce soir, to-night, al-right
Oh, what you doin’ way up here, way across la frontiere
Ce soir, to-night, al-right

She said “Je m’appelle petite Jouelle,
Je suis de Trois Rivieres,
Et tu est d’ou mon petite chou-chou?”
Je ne connais pas, mon cher
My truck broke down eight miles from town
And my French it ain’t that good
But I like your smile, it’s worth all the miles
That I spent a-haulin’ that wood

Oh, you black-haired Quebecois, let me be your beau Francois
Ce soir, to-night, al-right
Oh, what you doin’ way up here, way across la frontiere
Ce soir, to-night, al-right

My heart was on my sleeve, I was ‘bout ready to leave
When this stranger he walks through the door
He said “Quesque tu fait, avec ma fille?”
And my heart was lying on the floor
Well my wounds were licked, and the beer was kicked
It was time to get over this
I walked outside and I thumbed me a ride
And she came up and gave me a kiss

Oh, you black-haired Quebecois, let me be your beau Francois
Ce soir, to-night, al-right
Oh, what you doin’ way up here, way across la frontiere
Ce soir, to-night, al-right

Well I walked the miles, the cold was wild
But that kiss sure warmed my heart
Just my luck, I get to my truck and hear that old engine start
I got up the road, dropped off my load
Feeling easy and free
Mix Quebecois with my Southern drawl
Oh well, man – c’est la vie

Oh, you black-haired Quebecois, let me be your beau Francois
Ce soir, to-night, al-right
Oh, what you doin’ way up here, way across la frontiere
Ce soir, to-night, al-right
Yeah, ce soir, to-night, outta sight

a familiar one...

"This one's for Mance Lipscomb." - Critter Fuqua

TAKE 'EM AWAY

Take ‘em away, take ‘em away, Lord
Take away these chains from me
My heart is broken ‘cause my spirit’s not free
Lord, take away these chains from me

Some birds’ feathers are too bright to be caged
I know I’m not that colorful, but a bird just the same
So open up your gate now, let me put down my load
So I can feel at ease and go back to my home

Take ‘em away, take ‘em away, Lord
Take away these chains from me
My heart is broken ‘cause my spirit’s not free
Lord, take away these chains from me

Sun beatin’ down, my legs can’t seem to stand
Boss man at the turn-row with a rifle in his hand
I got nine children and nothin’ in the pan
My wife she died hungry while I was plowin’ land

Take ‘em away, take ‘em away, Lord
Take away these chains from me
My heart is broken ‘cause my spirit’s not free
Lord, take away these chains from me

Can’t see when I start work, can’t see when I get off
How do you expect a man not to get lost?
Every year I just keep gettin' deeper in debt
If there’s a happy day, Lord, I haven’t seen one yet

Take ‘em away, take ‘em away, Lord
Take away these chains from me
My heart is broken ‘cause my spirit’s not free
Lord, take away these chains from me

Land that I love is the land that I’m workin’
It’s hard to love it all the time when your back is a-hurtin’
I'm gettin’ too old now to push this here plow
Please let me lay down so I can look at the clouds

Take ‘em away, take ‘em away, Lord
Take away these chains from me
My heart is broken ‘cause my spirit’s not free
Lord, take away these chains from me

(Instr.)

It's hard to be a black man in this East Texas town
You grow the food the white folks eat and they kick you when you're down
But I've got somethin' they can never take from me
A little bit of hope that someday I'll be free

Take ‘em away, take ‘em away, Lord
Take away these chains from me
My heart is broken ‘cause my spirit’s not free
Lord, take away these chains from me

The world I know is where two rivers collide
The Brazos the Navasot' and the big blue sky
Flood plains and freight trains and watermelon vines
Of any place on God’s green earth, this is where I choose to die

Take ‘em away, take ‘em away, Lord
Take away these chains from me
My heart is broken ‘cause my spirit’s not free
Lord, take away these chains from me

When they bury me, they'll separate me from the whites
They still believe in segregation even after you die
In the next life I'll see the folks that done me wrong
I'll just give them a wink while I sing them this song

Take ‘em away, take ‘em away, Lord
Take away these chains from me
My heart is broken ‘cause my spirit’s not free
Lord, take away these chains from me

Take ‘em away, take ‘em away, Lord
Take away these chains from me
My heart is broken ‘cause my spirit’s not free
Lord, take away these chains from me

Ketch: "Doctor Train, take one..."
Critter: "Yeeeah!"
Ketch: "Break yo-self!"
Critter: "Yeeeah boyeee!"

DOCTOR TRAIN

There's a boy in Waterville, Maine
And they used to call him "Plain Jane"
'Cause he was so small and so petite
I guess to the boys he looked real sweet, but plain
It's all the same in Waterville, Maine

And he was born too early for his mother
But it was better than the fate of his brother
So sickly and young and when the doctor come
Rain was fallin' on a boy with a (colace thumb?)
But mama, she held on to the livin' one

So he grew up tough on Kennebec Street
And he learned how to cuss before he cut his first teeth
He went shelter to shelter 'til the age of four
'Til his mama, she just couldn't take it no more
When I met him, he was propped up on the kitchen floor

And the shelter this time was made out of bricks
Which is good, 'cause the last was wood and his mama burned up in it
He just stood by the window watchin' the rain
Lookin' like a dog cut loose from a chain
But he's still a dog just the same

And I can't say I remember his name
And all he could say was "Doctor Train"
He pointed to my guitar with a hand that looked lame
His hair so wild he hardly (had seen pain?)
"Play me Doctor Train"

And I sang Doctor Train come ride me home tonight
From the streets of Waterville, Maine out to where the moon shines bright
Cookies and cream in the club car, and mama and pop in the diner
No place for a moonlight breakfast could be finer
And we sang Doctor Train don't leave no wake-up call
Just tell the porters to turn down my bed and that's all
And don't tell no one I'm here
Doctor Train said "Boy, you got nothin' to fear"
And somewhere in Maine, Plain Jane rides Doctor Train
And somewhere in Maine, Plain Jane rides Doctor Train

Well I left that night to play a show in Waldo
I rode out feelin' like a star, but it was just some show in Waldo
It's a funny thing, that State of Maine
Makes a man feel like he's born again
But in the same pair of pants with the pockets empty of change

And I seen a lot of kids livin' out there on the street
You ought to see 'em in Juneau, Alaska dressed in garbage bags to their feet
Greensboro punks (all discussed?) they got nowhere to go
Seen 'em hopped up and heavy, seen 'em all drunk and stoned
They wanna die, but they don't even got the dough

And what about that boy in Waterville, Maine
The one they used to tease on the bus and call him Plain Jane
Is he a gutter punk, is he a straight angel
Well there really ain't no way to tell
Lest I go back to Maine for a spell

And I'll be singin' Doctor Train come ride me home tonight
From the streets of Waterville, Maine out to where the moon shines bright
Cookies and cream in the club car, and mama and pop in the diner
No place for a moonlight breakfast could be finer
And I sang Doctor Train don't leave no wake-up call
Just tell the porters to turn down my bed and that's all
And don't tell no one I'm here
Doctor Train said "Boy, you got nothin' to fear"
And somewhere in Maine, Plain Jane rides Doctor Train
And somewhere in Maine, Plain Jane rides Doctor Train

I went back to Waterville, Maine
Just to take a look around and see how things had changed
But the shelter was closed, it was boarded up
So I took to the streets to sing for my sup'
In an hour and a half I filled my cup

And the sun was goin' down where I sat at the river fork
And I was thinking 'bout headin' back home to New York
When up the street I see some scrawny kid
With a stack full of books piled under his ribs
He looked like he'd been livin' on the skids

And he said "What you doin' out here, mister, in the cold?"
And I said "Freezin' my ass off, son - now don't call me mister, 'cause I ain't that old"
So I asked him "What you doin' hangin' 'round here?"
-"I'm comin' home from school, I live real near,
I'm studyin' to be a doctor or an engineer."

And he said "You play guitar, mister, are you good?"
"And will you play a song for me, mister?" - and I said I would
And up in the sky it looked like rain
I gazed up the streets of Waterville, Maine
And said "Do you know that song called Doctor Train?"

HEART UP IN THE SKY

Old Joe woke up
At a quarter to five
‘Cause the girls needed milking
Lest they go dry
They’d done it for forty-five years
So it was no surprise
But when he went outside, he seen that heart up in the sky

Well it shined like a quarter
In a baby’s hands
On the Fourth of July
Near the Rio Grande
It shined like a diamond
In a jar of sand
And it made Joe’s cornfield look like it was born again

And I put my heart up in the sky
And I pushed it way up high
I just wondered what the people‘d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
I put my heart up in the sky
I can’t really tell you why
I just wondered what the people’d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue

Well he reached for his heart
Like to have him a stroke
And he called for his wife
Who thought it was just some kind of joke
Like when he called the preachers up
‘Cause the hens layed triple yolks
But up in the sky was a heart that was taller than an oak

It was forty feet up
And it was ten feet wide
It was pumping like a madman
Swept up in the tide
And when his wife came out from the inside
She fell to her knees
And she almost died

And I put my heart up in the sky
And I pushed it way up high
I just wondered what the people‘d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
I put my heart up in the sky
I can’t really tell you why
I just wondered what the people’d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue

Well the first thing they did
Was get the paper on the wire
And they had their son paged
He was a contracter-for-hire
And they called their estranged daughter
She fell in love with a man from the Ozark mire
And a bus rode up with the entire First Presbyterian choir

And there was a doctor
Called in from town
Who showed up in Chevy
With a black bag and a frown
Who said there wasn’t nothin’ to bring that heart on down
‘Cause it was a healthy heart
That old Joe’d found

And I put my heart up in the sky
And I pushed it way up high
I just wondered what the people‘d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
I put my heart up in the sky
I can’t really tell you why
I just wondered what the people’d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue

Well the people gathered ‘round
And they sang their songs
And the preachers and the sinners
They all writ their wrongs
And they stayed up for that all night long
‘Cause that beatin’ heart
It was just like a burnin’ sun

But it didn’t last long
And I’ll tell you why
‘Cause the word spread wide
And they sent out the FBI
And every pretty girl in Missouri and all their sweethearts cried
The day they shot that heart
Out of the clear blue sky

And I put my heart up in the sky
And I pushed it way up high
I just wondered what the people‘d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
I put my heart up in the sky
I can’t really tell you why
I just wondered what the people’d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue

Well I was four counties over
When I looked up and I saw
And I trailed that military truck
All the way to Utah
And me and my sisters
And an old gray Choctaw
We stole back that heart
From the heartless law

And I put my heart up in the sky
And I pushed it way up high
I just wondered what the people‘d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
I put my heart up in the sky
I can’t really tell you why
I just wondered what the people’d do
If they seen my heart up there in the blue
If they seen my heart up there in the blue

EYESIGHT TO THE BLIND

You talk about your woman
I wish to God that you could see mine
You talk about your woman
I wish to God that you could see mine
Every time that little girl start to lovin' - whooo
She bring eyesight to the blind

Lord, her daddy musta been a millionaire
'Cause I can tell by the way she walk
Her daddy musta been a millionaire
Because I can tell by the way she walk
Every time she start to lovin'
The deaf and dumb begin to talk

Oh, I swear she pretty
Whole state knows she fine
Yeah, I declare she pretty
God knows I declare she fine
When my lil' girl she start to lovin' - baby
She bring eyesight to the blind

Great, great stuff. Any ideas on songwriting credits? I'm not sure how reliable the singer is; isn't Heart Up in the Sky a Ketch number that he later gave Critter to sing?

QUEBECOIS ! Quebecois! I'd love to see all these performed again. On an album too.

I think you're right, Dave. It makes sense with the rest of the verse.

Tucky...do you perhaps have the lyrics to Send You All My Love? I've been doing some New Brunswick research for a friend and every time I hear this song I wish I could pick up on all the references.

ACADIAN COAST

Well I'm a sea-washed stone
I'm a high-tide risin'
I'm a sun goin' up over Prince Edward Island
I'm a thistle in the wind on a road that don't go nowhere
I'm the sun goin' down past the St. John Riviere

Now don't you worry
'Cause everything's fine
Might get a little lonely
Here in the Maritime
Down at the seawall
I fed the gulls my coffee and my toast
And I send you all my love from the Acadian coast

Well I'm a worker in the berry fields
I'm the sweat runnin' down
I was born to spend all my days at Charlottetown
I'm the tide rollin' in where the rock lobsters play
I'm the last of the (right west) come to rest in Fundy Bay

Now don't you worry
'Cause everything's fine
Might get a little lonely
Here in the Maritime
Down at the seawall
I fed the gulls my coffee and my toast
And I send you all my love from the Acadian coast

Well I'm a boring on the wall
I'm the spoons on your knee
In the Miramichi tavern singin' "fiddly-aye-deee"
Was a soldier in the Great War and I served a free world
And I sailed home to New Brunswick to court a Madawaskan girl

Now don't you worry
'Cause everything's fine
Might get a little lonely
Here in the Maritime
Down at the seawall
I fed the gulls my coffee and my toast
And I send you all my love from the Acadian coast

Now don't you think that I'm more than I am
You just do things a little different when you're in Maritime land
I've a right good back and there's sores upon my hands
But I thank God to live every day in this land

I'm a mug of beer
I'm a bottle of wine
I'm a sailor tossed in the ocean brine
I'm an ancient pine tree wondering my fate
I'm a sailor pullin' the traps of Northumberland Strait

Now don't you worry
'Cause everything's fine
Might get a little lonely
Here in the Maritime
Down at the seawall
I fed the gulls my coffee and my toast
And I send you all my love
I send you all my love
I send you all my love from the Acadian coast

Rock, I think. and just play ...

And for the next line, I'm getting
"I'm the last to the right-west country, restin' funny bay"
or "right west country-western"
or "Fundy Bay"

That's a tricky one...

Madawaskan?

No, no, it's "I'm the last, to the right-west come to rest in Fundy bay"!
...maybe

Still not sure what the last thing is about, I'm assuming right as in "immediate" west.

Or maybe my punctuation is wrong...
"I'm the last to the right-west, come to rest in Fundy bay"

Yep - I hear exactly what you're saying, whistle. All of it makes sense except for that right-west bit, which I also hear.

rock lobster doesn't make sense if you read up on your spiny lobsters.
and we may have another Johnson City in Charlottetown. lol.

Yeah, I'm still trying to sort out all the geography on this one.
I couldn't find the Mare Machie tavern, unless it's meant as a reference to the Michie Tavern in CharlottesVILLE, which means I'm even more confused that I ought to be.

This is my last shot at that stanza ... I think this one makes a little more sense but I'm still not convinced. That slurring accent don't help none!

I was born to spend all my days at Charlottetown
On the tide rollin' in where the rock lobsters play
On the last to the right where it's come to rest in Fundy Bay

And on second listen, is it "I'm a sailor pulling the straps on Northumberland Strait"?

ALSO: Any idea if this melody is an original or a rewrite? I really like it.

pulling for sure. pulling traps as in lobster harvesting i'm thinking.

leaving the charlottetown verse alone. the "on the tide" and "on the last" is departing from the recurring 'I am' theme.

as far as the tavern goes - i'm thinking mere as in mother. mother machie or michie. that makes sense. i'm preferring machie over michie on pronunciation alone.

my guess is original tune.

Thanks Tucky for doing this! I just got a chance to look at it. I was singing most of that, but you cleared up a few geography references I didn't have.

Tell you what, let me know what Katie's singing like in "Creek Don't Rise" and we're square. That's driving me CRAZY.
