I liked this one the first time...

BACK TO NEW ORLEANS (---debut 2/4/08---)

Pardon me, sir, you got a dime?
I’m tryin’ to find my way back to New Orleans
Broke down and stumblin’ all the time
I need just one kind favor to reach my destiny

Lost my ticket for a Greyhound bus
Well it left me in the dust and gone away
Man at the station said “Boy, get lost –
Start goin’ your own way.”
I’m walkin’ forty days and nights under the Texas sun
Won’t someone help me, please?
Spare just a dollar or a dime
I’m tryin’ to find my way back to New Orleans

I did my time in Baton Rouge, in Birmingham and Houston, too
But all I ever seen
Was weary faces just like mine
Waitin’ in endless lines just to try to find a seat

Lost their tickets for a Greyhound bus
Well it left them in the dust and gone away
Now all they’re askin’ is for you to help their cause
‘Cause they’re goin’ a long way
They’re walkin’ forty days and nights and still ain’t nearly done
Won’t someone help them, please?
Spare just a dollar or a dime
They’re tryin’ to find their way back to New Orleans

Been walkin’ forty days and nights under the Texas sun
Won’t someone help me, please?
Spare just a dollar or a dime
I’m tryin’ to find my way back to New Orleans
Spare just a dollar or a dime
I’m tryin’ to find my way back to New Orleans

Pardon me, sir, you got a dime?
I’m tryin’ to find my way back to New Orleans
Broke down and fallin' on hard times
I need just one kind favor to get back on my feet

Lost my ticket for a Greyhound bus
Well it left me in the dust and gone away
Man at the station says “Boy, get lost –
Start goin’ your own way.”
I’m walkin’ forty days and nights under the Texas sun
Won’t someone help me, please?

We're walkin’ forty days and nights and only just begun
To reach our destiny
Still got a long hill left to climb
Come on, let's find our way back to New Orleans
Come on and find our way
Come on and find our way
Come on, let's find our way

I think what Ozark was saying, and I agree to some extent, that old songs are being "modified". Beacon Town and Caroline are prime examples.

This being a new song it has no history for the fans.

yeah i guess you're right. Although as the popularity of most bands grow, the older hardcore fans are always forced to remember the good ole days of the "way it was." I just hope that what ever Old Crow does, the fans don't revolt (a la Dylan circa 1965.)

Driving down from NC to Louisiana this weekend with this song playing and driving back from Louisiana in Gustav Evacuation traffic while "I Hear them All" is playing is pretty eye opening!!!...just glad everyone in LA came out better than Katrina

By the way, I went down to watch Appalachian State Univ. play LSU, LSU killed us. But the LSU fans/LA folk are some of the best people on Earth...Kudos to a great state...GO TIGERS, GO NEERS!!!

Isn't this the second thing they've done now in relation to Katrina? The video for I Hear Them All features New Orleans and seeks donations to help people after the storm.

What I'm wondering about is the band's connection to New Orleans. Are these the actions of genuinely good people, or was anyone from the band directly impacted by the hurricane?

Caroline and Greatest Hustler both mention New Orleans, too.

(EDIT: Actually Caroline might be a different Levee Embarassed )

Gill grew up near NOLA didn't he?

Of course they are genuinely good people...

Gill is, I believe, from Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana -- Lake Charles area... It's close to New Orleans in the sense that it's in southern Louisiana -- on the Tejas border...

And Stu -- Caroline does mention NoLa... "you come floatin' down over ____ to the sweet green levee on the riverside"...
