This just came through via the OCMS Newsletter...
HIGHWAY HALO
Driving rain, narrow shoulder
Breakdown lane, marching forward
Going where I do not know
One eye on the open road
Stepping out in the great unknown
With a Highway Halo
Shaky face, Lily Kimball
Patron saint, traveling minstrel
Let her dusty wings unfold
Forgive her bad luck soul
Put her in a purple robe
And a Highway Halo
Passing trains, sound like silver
Broken chains, shine like gold
Fortune's just a painted stone
Goin' where them hobos roam
Crowned king of a jungle throne
With a Highway Halo
Goin' where it suits my soul
Can't you hear my big wheels roll
You can light up the darkest road
With a beam of eternal glow
With a Highway
With a Highway
With a Highway Halo |

That's all I found that made any sense, too. Though I haven't heard it yet.

Tell me Lilly Kimball : what did you do to me
These Lilly Kimball blues : is nearly killing me
It's hard it's hard : but I suppose it's fair
These Lilly Kimball blues : won't let me rest nowhere
I love you Lilly Kimball : don't want no other one
Is it too late now : to make up for all I done
It's hard to love you Lilly : you love somebody else
I believe it's going to make me : grieve myself to death
I believe I'm going crazy : my mind I'm bound to lose
If I don't get over : these Lilly Kimball blues
When I'm blue : it's good to have you around
Because when you start loving : it bring my kindness down
I'm going to the river : tie my hands behind
And let that Tennessee water : satisfy my mind
Can't you see Lilly : I want you to understand
Take me back Lilly : I'll be a different man |

I don't think it is "shaky face", I think it is "shaky faith" or maybe "shaken faith" which kind of fits with Lilly Kimball Blues. Just a thought. |

Liner notes?
I'm pretty sure it's 'Shaky' but I can't actually hear a consonant at the end of 'Fa..' so it could be anything and the internal rhyme is saint ... |

How does this sound?
The opening chords are like this - the E..B.A is a riff on the beat of "Dri---Ving-Rain" a bit like The Velvets' "Sweet Jane" long E short B
EDIT chords removed to avoid confusion |

Good start, GumboStu...think this might be a little more accurate, just did some chord rearranging...Man, playing these songs yourself really makes 'em grow on you
Highway Halo

Highway Halo
Intro: E-B-A

Driving rain, narrow shoulder
E...B.........A......C#m....B...E.......

Going where I do not know
A-flat...............A.....E.....

I think it should be:
One eye on the open road
Aflat7..............C#m..B..
I love the song, by the way... |

Right on, Dolf. My mistake.
So after corrections it should be:
Highway Halo
Intro: E-B-A
E...B…...A...C#m....B...A......
Driving rain, narrow shoulder
E...B.........A......C#m....B...E.......
Breakdown lane, marching forward
A....................E...........

Aflat7..............C#m...B...
One eye on the open road
A...........................E...............
Stepping out in the great unknown
E.............B...A...B...E....
With a Highway Halo
&c. |

I found the CD at a used CD store in Atlanta (advanced copy) about two weeks ago. The CD does include all lyrics. Critter does vocals on a few songs and the new Banjo player wrote and sang one song. |

That's it. I wasn't trying to be a wiseguy, by the way. Just trying to help
Now the bluesharpsolo. That'll be harder. For me anyway. I've got a couple of bluesharps fot years but never really took the time to actually practice... |

you know one thing I never get, just generally speaking for example, is why you might call it C#m instead of D flat minor. It's the same thing but there are obviously notation reasons on why you'd want to call it one vs the other, I just don't understand the theory benefit of choosing one vs. the other |

Yeah, I think the benefit is largely notational, like you suggest. It would be pretty confusing mixing up sharps and flats in the key signature. In this song, for example, the D-line already represents the 7th of the scale, and it would be pretty awful if every time you ran into a D you would have to choose between D# or Db. I think in advanced music theory it's important when you're naming chords based on the context of a piece, but I really don't understand it at an appreciable level (i.e. what's the difference between an augmented fifth and a minor sixth?). Any music majors? |

Right on. Most of the time keys are considered "sharp keys" or "flat keys". Keys that guitar players like are most often sharp keys such as G,A,E, or D. This tune is in the key of E so the appropriate notes are referred to as sharp. This is helpful with standard notation so you don't end up with an unreadable mess of sharps and flats. From a theory perspective I can't see why it would make much difference because you are correct to say C#m and Db minor are the same chord. Hope this helps.

Man, I love to read ya'lls posts about theory and such. I'm largely uneducated in the finer points of guitar and music, I taught myself to play about 10 years ago. Reading your bits of info kinda makes me feel smarter... I'm just glad I can hold a beat and make it sound close!
