At the turn of the 20th century there were banjo orchestras. .. there were mandolin orchestras as well.

WETS 89.5FM - "Roots & Branches" - interview - 1/25/02

Between "Fancy Nancy" and "You Got To Die"

Ketch: "At one point we had a banjo orchestra, in which we had a banjo-ukelele, banjo-mandolin, a guitjo, um, the five-string open-back banjo, and a banjo bass... it was pretty... pretty surreal."
Dan Hershey : "So how big is a banjo bass?"
Ketch: "It's as tall as a regualr bass - it's um..."
Critter: "...a giant banjo."
Ketch: "...it's pretty big."
Critter?: "Hoo, that's a big ol' banjo."
Dan Hershey: "Now I understand, um, you tend to, well, you tend to swap instruments, um..."
Willie?: "Yeah."
Dan Hershey: "I noticed, uh, Critter, you've, you're now, uh, set your banjo down and..."
Critter: "Yeah, I got a dobro."
Dan Hershey: "Um, do you switch, do you play a lot of instruments, and, and, and, who plays what and..."
Willie: "I think every one of us is a banjo player. And uh... I play the fiddle, too. Anything with strings on it I think we can cover it. Critter plays a good piano - and a real good drum set, too."

I was thinking when I made the post that it was from the whole "Roots & Branches" interview but something made me think I read it. Anyway thanks for showing me this. I thought it was interesting...never heard of ah banjo orchestra but mandolin orchestra yes. Any links to an audio of a banjo orchestra?

I never realized Critter could play drums and the piano, like they say "learn something new everyday"
