POUR IT ON, DOCK

Some men killin’s what they need
They got bones to break and hearts to bleed
Some men hold the Lord within
The demons sit on the porch and they watch the wind
Pour it on, we swear it on
Death is dead and gone and gone
And pour it on, the crows they sing
Side by side and the vultures hissing

Pour it on…
Dock…

Why’d you kill the old lady?
She got between the bullet and me
And at least some souls are born for thee
And others have got their souls with thee
Pour it on, we swear it on
Death is dead it’s gone it’s gone
Pour it on, the crows they sing
Side by side and the vultures hissing

Pour it on, Dock…

Pour it on…

We’ll swear you on, Dock…

Pour it on!!

Come on, Dock…

Well, pour it on…
We’ll swear you on…
Pour it on…
Dock!!

Maybe work the mines no more
We’ll break the doors and shoot them whores
And sign our name in the big white book
Or scorch in Hell for the lives we took
Pour it on, we swear it on
Death is dead and gone and gone
Pour it on, the crows sing
Side by side and the vultures hissing

Pour it on…

Pour it on…
Death is dead…
And gone and gone…

Some men killin’s what they need…

that's what I get, too - Dm and C

it's not really about the chords, though ...

Is this played in Double-C tuning? I won't have access to a banjo or guitar for another two weeks, but maybe some of the fine folks on this forum can help you out before then.

After cleaning out my left ear and getting some of that good red earth outta there I can now hear a third chord.

I'm just a guitar basher though ....

Dm///Bb/C/ (repeat)

Hey all. I saw this post and thought I'd work this tune out since no one else has. I uploaded two youtube videos, which hopefully someone will find helpful. I am happy to break it down or show more slowly, any part that is not clear. Just ask.

Sorry for the poor audio/video quality.

I just uploaded another video of this, but closer up. Check youtube.

When I compress these videos with Windows Movie Maker it makes the audio sound terrible. Otherwise if I dont compress them, the file sizes are like 150mb. Anyone know another way?

Teton - - missed all this the first time around. Saw your Ben Ward's Tune, too. One of my faves... that song lifts my spirits and makes me think about hitting the road... good traveling song!

Hi!
I wanted to ask y'all what this song is about. I just love it, the lyrics are great and so is the music, but I don't understand the context.

Who is Dock? Why do they want to kill someone? What is the big white book?

Can someone explain it to me, so I can do an analysis line by line?

Also, I don't understand what they mean with "Pour it on, we swear you on". I'm Spanish, and I guess this is some sort of slang or something. What does it mean?

Thanks y'all!

It's based on a story told about Virginia Banjo player, Dock Boggs who pulled a gun on someone he was having a dispute with.

It could be this occaision
http://www.angelfire.com/folk/longtimecoming/dockboggs/interview_excerpts.html#13

it's a while since i read the story, so i'm not sure if that's the one. The phrase 'Pour It On, Dock' was used by his friends to encourage Dock to pull the trigger. That part isn't in the link (above). I read it in the notes to the Revenant CD of Dock Boggs' 20s records - the notes were written by Greil Marcus, and it is mentioned in his book 'The Invisible republic' in the chapter on Boggs. (see page 167) but it isn't stated there what was going on at the time. Just that Dock was encouraged but didn't pull the trigger.

The line about 'the old lady, she got between the bullet and me' comes from a plan Dock never carried out, to kill his wife's family, and what he would say when he got caught.

Sounds like he was in a dark place, but then the place he lived sounded like a dark place, and Dock's music isn't exactly about sunshine and flowers.

EDIT I don't think you'll be able to do a line by line analysis of the song, Spanish Crow. It seem to me that the Old Crows took some lines from stories, almost mythologies, and wove themselves right in there, walkin around amidst the ghosts of the hills they were living in at the time.

Since this song deals heavily in spiritual language, I'm assuming the big white book is the Book of Life.

I'm pretty sure about that; everything hereon is my (probably wrong) interpretation:

The "pour it on" part reminds me of Matthew 5:45 - "That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust."

In the first verse he describes the unjust (those with a thirst for killing) and the just (those with the Lord within). The "rain" is a metaphor for hard times: the narrator is challenging God to send evil his way, maybe as a boast: "That's all ya got?". That would make God "Dock" I guess. There's an ambiguity in the actions that the narrator is planning to take ("shoot them whores") - is it the work of God or Satan? That's left unresolved.

I've also wondered if "Dock" is instead the Devil, which would negate what I've said above.

Anyone else read this differently?

interesting stuff, whistle. I was always curious what the phrase actually meant and where it originated.

Personally it reminds me of pouring petrol on a campfire when i was a kid. Things got out of hand pretty quickly there!

I would have thought the Big White Book would be St. Peter's. Is that The Book Of Life?

Hi all!

I've just uploaded a banjo tab for Pour it on Dock to the Banjo Hangout tab archive.
It sounds just like the Wawa version to me.

The tab was written by stevel from the hangout, and I've done some little arrangements to make it sound like the Wawa intro.

Just go here:
http://www.banjohangout.org/w/tab/browse/m/bykeyword/v/Pour+it+on+Dock+%28Old+Crow+Medicine+Show%29

Hope it helps ya learning it Smile

much better to hear it than read it (although the tab is helpful)

No, GumboStu, I haven't bought a new one yet, I still have my old Stagg banjo (and it's going to take me some time 'til I get myself a Bart Reiter), but it sounds ok, anyway. Now I've decided to take off the resonator, so it's more like an open-back. I like the sound more, but I prefer an open-back Smile

Well, I haven't learned the tune yet. I got the tab yesterday an hour before I posted the tab, so I just edited it by listening to the Wawa version and writing it on Guitar Pro.

However, I'll probably upload the video early next week, as this week I'm quite busy Smile

"I don't know why I ain't killed nobody. I just ain't got that in me. Mike, I've had a chance, people talkin' over my shoulder, telling me, "Pour it on, Dock", and me with a .38 Special in my hand, dead cocked. 'Bout the only person that, and they really needed killing. I mean, if you count anyone needed killing. "Pour it on, Dock, we'll swear you on, pour it on, pour it on." I say no, no I won't do it without he goes too far and they never went too far and I never poured it on. And I ain't got no blood on my hands."

Boggs in an interview about his struggle with and against violence.

It's quoted in Greil Marcus' Invisible Republic, about Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes, released in 1997. I'm sure this is where Ketch picked it up.
