Song: Track 10 - Old Red

Red, red, come back to bed
An' that is what your baby said
At Chicago wise
Stuck her off on a New York state
Somethin somethin under my ?plate?
Red, red, come back she sighs
Old Red ride the poor man? on the sail to ol' New Orleans
Old Red in the diner boys hes eatin them greasy greens

Red red come back to bed
Thats what your baby said
At chicago wise
Stuck her off on a New York state
Somethin somethin under my ?plate?
Red, red, come back she sighs
Ol' Red been a shot down
Red been to st. Lou
Rather be in a cadillac car
Right right there next to you!

Red red come back to bed
thats what your baby said
at chicago wise
Stuck her off on a New York state
Somethin somethin under my ?plate?
Red, red, come back she sighs
Old red go to country
Ol' red go to town
Old Red in the ?glov of are car? gonna lay his money right down

Gonna lay his money right dowoooo!

Old Red!

Here's the lyrics from the old site...

Lyrics - Old Red
Writer: (Traditional)
Album: Greetings From Wawa
Thanks to: Jamie

Chorus:
Red Red come back to bed
That is what your baby said
On that Chicago wire
Stuck her off on the New York state
Pulled the claw from under my plate
Red Red come back she sassed

Old Red ride the Pullman
On a Saturday to New Orleans
Old Red and Old Iron boys
Yeah shake that crazy ---

(Chorus)

Old Red been a-shot down
Old Red been to St. Claire's
I'd rather be in a Cadillac car
Riding right there next to you

Old Red

(Chorus)

Old Red go to country
Old Red go to town
Old Red and the ---
Gonna lay his money right down

Gonna lay his money right down

I think the lyrics are somewhere between the 2 versions, and there are still some out there that aren't covered. I love this song, it would be a great one to learn to play. Now that I look at the liner notes on the old site, it says this song is an OCMS original.

Hey, your lyrics got me interested and I found that on the old site, as you can see they're not complete. And I think that listening to the version of the song on Wawa that some of these are different??? I'd like to get all the lyrics figured out, and also get some of the meaning behind them possibly? Anyone?

OLD RED

Red, Red, come back to bed
That is what your baby said
At the Chicago wire
Took her off on the New York State
Pulled the cloth from under my plate
Red, Red, come back, she sassed
-
Old Red ride the Pullman
On the City of New Orleans
Old Red in the diner, boys
He's eatin' them creasy green(s)
-
Old Red been to Chi-town
Old Red been to St. Lou
Rather be in a Cadillac car
Ridin' right there next to you
...Old Red
-
Old Red go to country
Old Red go to town
Old Red in the club car, boy
Gonna lay his money right down
...Gonna lay his money right down
......Old Red

****************************************

I've only heard one live version of this song and it is pretty much the same, with some lyrical mishaps. The live version is definately "at the Chicago wire," but is different from the Wawa version with "off TO the New York State." And then there's the extra verse ending, of which I can't exactly decipher the end.

Old Red like a cocktail
Old Red like a cookie in it, too
Old Red like the creasy green(s)
??????????????????????????????

After I read bacon's post about the song being about a dog (which it may well be - a gambling dog that likes creasy greens), that last line sounds kinda like "The kibble and the kennel, it'll do..." - But it's not. Laughing

Ol' Red
By Blake Shelton

Well I caught my wife with another man
And it cost me ninety nine
On a prison farm in Georgia
Close to the Florida line
Well I'd been here for two long years
I finally made the warden my friend
And so he sentenced me to a life of ease
Taking care of Ol Red

Now Ol' Red he's the damnedest dog that I've ever seen
Got a nose that can smell a two day trail
He's a four legged tracking machine
You can consider yourself mighty lucky
To get past the gators and the quicksand beds
But all these years that I've been here
Ain't nobody got past Red

And the warden sang
Come on somebody
Why don't you run
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern
Get my gun
Red'll have you treed before the mornin' comes

Well I paid off the guard and I slipped out a letter
To my cousin up in Tennessee
Oh and he brought down a blue tick hound
She was pretty as she could be
Well they penned her up in the swampland
'Bout a mile just south of the gate
And I'd take Ol' Red for his evening run
I'd just drop him off and wait

And the warden sang
Come on somebody
Why don't you run
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern
Get my gun
Red'll have you treed before the mornin' comes

Now Ol' Red got real used to seeing
His lady every night
And so I kept him away for three or four days
And waited till the time got right
Well I made my run with the evenin' sun
And I smiled when I heard 'em turn Red out
'Cause I was headed north to Tennessee
And Ol' Red was headed south

And the warden sang
Come on somebody
Why don't you run
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern
Get my gun
Red'll have you treed before the mornin' comes

Now there's red haired blue ticks all in the South
Love got me in here and love got me out

***This one's about a dog Smile

I think that in the song, the "New York State" is a train line kinda like the "City of New Orleans" - she's on the NYS and Red has ditched her at Chicago to hop on the "City". That's just what I gather.

And I said creasy greens... CREASY GREENS!!!
