Ms. Marsh has an album coming out very soon, entitled "The Hills Will Cradle Thee."
Described by Emmylou Harris as a cross between Laura Nyro and Rickie Lee Jones --- with a bluegrass element lurking, Lainie Marsh sings of her Appalachian roots from the unique perspective of an artist more concerned with expressing her true colors than with getting the Appalachian thing right. This is a brave record, down-home and exotic at once, that rises above the depiction of a hackneyed love-hate relationship with coal to a poignant portrait of the human experience. Featuring performances by Ketch Secor of The Old Crow Medicine Show, pedal-steel virtuoso Bucky Baxter, and Kent Goodson, long-time keyboardist with George Jones, The Hills Will Cradle Thee showcases Lainie's deft penmanship as well as her ability to take a traditional piece like Dream of a Miner's Child and make it her own. That she is also an extraordinarily agile vocalist with a maverick style will be lost on no one. |
