I'd like to start up the Justin Townes Earle topic. Anyone got any songs worked out yet? There is a version of Lone Pine Hill posted - I'll paste it in ...

.... I wanted to ask -this is the second vid of this song on Youtube, and it's a cracker. Known only as New Song so far.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZuXGAnKgSw

Anyone know what tuning this is? I thought Justin played mostly in standard but not having seen him live I don't know what he's doing between songs.

Untitled

I'm gonna find me a woman gonna treat her downright low
she'll cry me a river and my crop is gonna grow
I'm gonna find another girl and I'll put her up the street
so If one don't feed me then I still can eat

Well I used to drink boys, I used to cuss
I used to lie and steal cheat and cause a hell of a fuss
But I give up that drinkin, now I walk that line
but I still get higher than a Tennessee pine

Well lately I've been broke, had me but one thin dime
give me a loaded pistol or some loaded dice
I'm no ordinary man, no I don't have to work
I just take what I need and nobody gets hurt

Ah well lookin at me now you might say that I look worn
cause my shoes are tattered and my coat is torn
Only once I looked good I wore silk on my back
I drove a cadillac car and wore stetson hat

Well my daddy sat me down and he told me, son
Don't you never get in trouble and you'll never have to run
but my Mama she knew better, said I remind her of her Pa
said boy you keep moving and you'll never get caught
boy you keep moving and you'll never get caught

there's a new verse in that one since the Bonnaroo version (which has some great facial expressions Very Happy )

EDIT OK answering my own question here
The Bonnaroo vid shows it nicely. It sounds like an open tuning because it pretty much a C shape all the way through (capo on 2 so Key of D)
with a neat run to G shape every 2nd line. and lots of play with the little finger and pulling off the middle finger on the way into the G shape.

No it's not on Yuma, or any of the other two albums. Great little song though. I'd love to hear more stuff like this on his next album. I don't listen to Midnight at the Movies so much, and prefer the rawer stuff.

Check out the KEXP at SXSW vid of Justin. This song starts at about the 4:45 mark and it's pretty close up of him in a room by himself.

Does anyone have the chord progression for the song Yuma worked out? I think this is a beautiful song with amazing lyrics and I have a passion for this song because I have a friend that went through some of the things the song talks about. Later tonight I'll post up the lyrics for it if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Yuma

Well he woke up that mornin and he called into work
put on his daddys old suit with a second hand shirt,
all untucked,
shoes untied,
people all snickered as he walked by so he stopped in a bar,
bought a shot of stevens and another
he bummed a cigarette and started talkin a little strange about the weather
then he paid his bill and stepped outside
fell down into the street
he cursed and he cried as he climbed back up to his feet again

So up the road he found a pay phone and called his mom he said momma I think I'll be comin home I been feelin so bad
and I'm tired of this city
aint been the same since I lost my pretty Angeline(?)
momma I miss her so
it's been over a year and there aint nothin I fear so much as bein alone
then he hung up the phone without sayin good-bye
stopped in a store bought a post card and signed it "fair the well" and sent it back home to Yuma

Well lookin back I'd say, it wasn't so much the girl
as it was the booze and the dope and the way he took the weight of the world up upon his shoulders
and let it wash the blue from his eyes as he grew colder
and for all those lonely night they're left alone

See he was just 23 when he stepped out from that ledge it was his
weary heart that pushed him to the edge he was tired of livin life
and lookin for love
a weary heart just needs a little touch and is it too much to ask
he cried as he stepped into the wind
he turned his back on the world and he fell back to earth again
so with the wind in his hair and the smile on his face
he crashed through the hood of an old's 98 and he layed there dyin on a cold winters day all alone
all alone

I may have messed up in a few places but that's about right

Gumbo I saw on halfwaytojackson.blogspot.com that they've titled that new song "Keep Movin Boy". You should check out that website. Lots of info & tapes of live shows there.

im thinking Steven's is a bourbon of some sort. or a scotch perhaps?

but all i can find is a type of beer, that of which you wont normally do shots of, unless your not really from the south, in which case, i dont know what they shoot. haha

GHOST OF VIRGINIA

Capo 7

G.......................................C............G............................
Well she comes out at night with the cold winds of December
..............C...................................G........
And when its quiet you hear her engines cry
...........G...........................C................G...........................
She blows smoke at her wheels and her gears pound the steel
........C.........D.............G...........
As they carry her on down the line

Now I'm sure that you've heard stories as most of us have
In the lunch-counter barber-shop queues
She's the Ghost of Virginia and from Raleigh up to Richmond
And she runs by the light of the moon

Well a few years back on the old Suffolk Road
Where it crosses the abandoned rail-line
My Grandpa claimed that he'd seen a freight train
And she wasn't no sleek streamline

She was coal black and steel and she screamed as she cut
Her way clear of the pines
But he swears to this day he can feel the earth shake
And smell her smoke when the wind's just right

Ah but back in her day she was a real working horse
Hauling coal out for old man Ward
She was tied up in ribbons and sailed out of Richmond
Hauling soldiers durin' the war

Ah but some say she wrecked and she rides these rails
Hoping one day that she'll get it right
Others say she roams out picking up lost souls
And carrying them down to Carolina

So if you're ever out on the old Suffolk Road
And see this strangest of sights
She's the Ghost of Virginia bound from Raleigh up to Richmond
And you'd best stay out of her line
Yes you'd better stay out of her line

I don't think it's Roman Wharf, but I'm not sure what it is

Listening to this it sounds like he says "For Old Man ?"

I've never heard of Steven's, but evidently someone has- I was searching the dial today and Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" was on. R.C. has a line in there toward the end "this bottle of Stevens awakens ancient feelings..."

Not yet -- patience, man... It took me a while to figure out who Thornton Braithwaite was.

I will tell you the spot where all this goes down must be at where Rt. 58 and the old Petersburg & Weldon RxR intersect, 'cause old 460 (also a road to Suffolk) doesn't cross that railroad.
