OK I'm not prone to over exageration (much) but OMG this is fabulous. What a great sound, all the edge and depth that I didn't know was missing on 'Middle Of Everywhere' which i like a lot don't get me wrong but it's gentle ... Live in Holland knocks it over on the way to the bar! Their best recording so far.
Rodge - thanks again for the heads up - this is exactly what I've been waiting for!

This live album really is great! I was hoping they'd release one at some point, as live is where they really shine.
I have to say that I listen mostly to Marmalade and Beat, Move & Shake, as they have a certain "rawness" to them, which I prefer over the newer albums. The newer songs always seem to sound best live, so this album is just perfect.
A great selection of tracks as well.
Can't wait for Wednesday now!! |

I'm sure that NYE show is going to be killer!! I so wish I could be there for that! The Ryman is an amazing venue too.
I'll be sure to report back about the shows! Katie should be first, with the Brighton show being tonight, and then London on Monday. I'll be going to Glasgow on Wednesday and then Sligo and Dublin at the weekend. And I think Stu's going along to the Cork show. So we'll all be able to report about different shows. Happy days! It's sooo good to have all these gigs to look forward to! |

Just back from the London show. Wow they were awesome tonight and the audience was on fire! So great to see them get such a great reaction in such a fab venue - they looked like they belonged there
I'm always rubbish at doing reviews - I can never remember the set - but they played lots of old favourites and some new ones too. Yay for a new album coming out next year, plus the promise of another tour here too.
David Wax Museum seemed a little out of place in the context, but the other support act were a nice surprise - Rob Heron & The Teapad Orchestra - a new band from Newcastle of all places.
The queue to meet Pokey at the end of the night was something else. Never seen that happen before!

London sounds like it was a great show!
Had several other friends that went too (who don't know each other), and they all said it was fab!
Glasgow was amazing! Better venue than Stereo last time, with much better sound. It was pretty packed, and the audience was brilliant. Well up for it, and gave Rob Heron and his boys a great reception too, which was good to see.
Pokey and the lads seemed delighted with the rapturous reception they were getting from the moment they came onstage, and were on great form all night long.
Like Katie, I can never remember the set list, but they certainly played all these (in no particular order):
Bow-legged woman
La la blues
One town at a time
Ain't the same
In the graveyard now
Devil ain't lazy
Pack it up
Daffodil blues
Central time
Hard times come and go (where's the kazoo gone??!!)
Two-faced Tom
Fan it
That new song I don't know the name of
Drinkin' whiskey tonight
Encores:
Garbage man blues
Brick thieves (audience request - 2nd encore)
Move out of town
(I'll add more if I remember...)
There was only one song that was completely new to me, and of course I now can't remember its name. Central time is probably one of my favourites of the really new songs. They still call the unrecorded ones, such as bow-legged woman and one town at a time "new", which, I suppose to most of the audience they are, even though the boys have been playing them since last year.
The place was jumping and everyone was dancing and singing along all night long. Time just flew by!
If at all possible, they sound even slicker than they have when I saw them last, and it's great to see them in places with decent sound! They used to play a lot of small theatres when they first came here which had great sound, but the audiences were often small and often extremely quiet (and I don't mean the stupid chatting over the songs, but stuff like clapping after solos and showing appreciation when songs end). In (i presume) an effort to broaden their audience, they played some clubs with sometimes pretty rubbish sound, so it's great to see that it's all coming together nicely now. Good sound, nice mix of crowd, everyone happy
First time I've seen Adam play his vintage Gibson archtop (from 1939). What a sweet sound! A beast of a guitar, and he really makes her sing. What a great sound she has.
Before the show, they also recorded a session for Tenement TV. They record sessions in, as the name says, a tenement in Glasgow and then post them on their page. Mostly local stuff, and I've discovered them because they did a session with one of my favourite bands out of Dundee, Anderson McGinty Webster Ward and Fisher. So it'll be grand to see the boys getting added on to that. This is their website: www.tenementtv.com, but I'm not sure how quickly they'll upload the session.

Cork was fantastic! It was the Jazz Festival so a free (sponsored) gig and the place was packed to the gills, with the boys out chatting to people before hand. They played for about two hours with 5 or 6 new songs plus some off the (great) live CD just released. I get the impression they are testing out a lot of new songs right now. Actually the setlist looks kind of familiar - different order and I'm pretty sure we got Mississippi Girl, but similar. No kazoo either - I forgot to ask about that aftrwards. Only one track on the live CD has kazoo also so maybe it's being retired ?
Such a great night, not least because a friend set us up with a place to crash which ended up being an all night jam session ... plus a gig on Saturday night and a breakdown on the way home has meant precious little sleep but lots of good memories! |

Yes, I see he's pinched TJ Muller! Not surprised about that! Did he and the clarinetist fit in well?
Pokey must be so happy to finally be able to add a horn section. I remember talking to him some time in early 2010 about this, and he was already desperate to do so then. |
