LEEVI

Born up on the Blue Ridge
At the Carolina line
Baptised on the banks of the New River
Brought up on the bluegrass
And the clear moonshine
Yeah, tough as iron but a heart as soft as leather
Leevi

Like a fire on the mountain
Runnin' wild in those days
Playin' Knights of the Gold Horseshoe and Indian raids
Huntin' jackvine in the summertime
And in the fall it was ginseng
Yeah, a country boy don't belong in the desert anyway
Leevi
Lord, Lord, Lord they shot him down
Ten thousand miles from a Southern town
Oooooooh, Leevi

From Galax to Bagdhad
On a camouflaged airplane
Where it was a hundred-nineteen degrees for twenty days straight
Shoved off in the sandbox
In a rollin' Hum-Vee
Cryin' Daddy, Daddy this don't look like Virginia to me
Leevi
Lord, Lord, Lord they shot him down
Ten thousand miles from a Southern town
Oooooooh, Leevi

In the market square all the bells
Were ringin' loud to fill the air
Leevi gazed his eyes out through the rocket glare
Through the desert and the ocean
To the furthest fields of home
And when the bullets pierced his body, he was already gone
Leevi
Lord, Lord, Lord they shot him down
Ten thousand miles from a Southern town
Oooooooh, Leevi

Oooooooh, Leevi
Lord, Lord, Lord they shot him down
Ten thousand miles from a Southern town
Oooooooh, Leevi
Oooooooh, Lord, Lord, Leevi
Oooooooh, Lord, Leevi

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I started transcribing these lyrics from Youtube videos of OC and from people covering it and was stumped by some of it becuase the audio was not very good. I knew someone on this site would have em. Thanks again, you saved me some time and headache.

Hogg - I'll put up an adjustment to this and others before too long. Still just listenin' and soakin' it in and looking forward to Monday night in Nashville!

'tucky, I'm no purist, but didn't the boys finally decide on "Levi" rather than the spelling the young soldier used?

Actually I went through it and thought it looked dead on. I've seen many people saying "soft as a feather" instead of leather.

Have fun Monday! I'm counting down the days till Louisville. 2nd row. Cannot wait!

As for the name... I think they did change it to Levi on the album... but if I remember from the NPR story correctly, his name was spelled Leevi - which is why it is listed that way in early posts.

Yeah, I did some research after reading the article in PASTE yesterday - the young man spells it Leevi, I guess we'll have to see how its spelled on the release next week. I think it would be respectful NOT to spell it like his name because (IMO) its not only a tribute to Leevi Barnard but to every soldier that has sacrificed for this country.

After FURTHER research - yes it will be spelled LEVI on the release album.

LEVI (album version)

G Born up on the C Blue Ridge
At the D Carolina line
G Baptised on the C banks of the New D River
G Brought up on C bluegrass
And D clear moonshine
Yeah, G tough as iron but a C heart as soft as D leather
G Levi C .....
D Lord, Lord, Lord they shot him G down C
D Ten thousand miles from a Southern G town C
D Oooooooh, G Levi C D

Like a fire on the mountain
Runnin' wild in those days
Playin' Knights of the Golden Horseshoe and Indian raids
now it's parachutes and combat boots and camoflaged airplanes
and a country boy who don't belong in the desert anyway
Levi
Lord, Lord, Lord they shot him down
Ten thousand miles from a Southern town
Oooooooh, Levi

Well the Bm sandbox sure gets lonesome
and it's a Em hundred and nine degrees
singing Bm "Carry me back to Virginia, Lord
I'm C down here on my D knees

In the market square while the bells
Were ringin' loud to fill the air
Leevi gazed his eyes out through the rocket glare
Beyond the desert and the ocean
To the furthest fields of home
And when the bullets pierced his body, he was already gone
Levi
Lord, Lord, Lord they shot him down
Ten thousand miles from a Southern town
Oooooooh, Levi

Oooooooh, Levi
Lord, Lord, Lord they shot him down
Ten thousand miles from a Southern town
Oooooooh, Levi
Oooooooh, Levi

The G C D riff bounces away under the verse and the refrain so even though it might read like it's different you just lay that same riff until you get to the sandbox. Hope this helps

I like the tweaks for the album version. The original verse "Huntin' jackvine in the summertime And in the fall it was ginseng " definitely got an upgrade.

lol we'll figure something out

It's a funny thing. Way back when the new songs were being performed and we started to get youtube versions and stuff, Levi was way down on my list of songs I'd like to see on the album. i thought it was vaguely mawkish and opportunist. I have to say now though that I think they have totally nailed the mood with this version. It's clear cut and unsentimental, and still hits home. I reckon whatever your feelings about the war this song cuts to chase with what it's like to be a human being in that situation. I never thought it would be so great.

Couldn't agree more. It doesn't wallow in self pity and sadness. It's upbeat and reflective. Becoming my favorite of this album.

(btw) I screwed up the quote part of the post - not sure what I did there, sorry.

couldn't agree with you more gumbo and dirtyhogg! your exactly right! this song really hits home for me because i myself was brought up in a same similar way as the charcter in the song. i love how they make Levi think of home always, even when hes over there in a horible place. I always thought of home over there, every single day. Sometimes when i play or sing this song, my voice cracks or i tear up. really hits home for me and i love it! I wish i could personally thank the band for this song!

Ha. Yeah, I've heard that line before - unfortunately I'm old. I think a few movies stole that "you see these stripes...!?" line from the military.

So when he writes "playin" - its a game/re-creation that kids do of this historical Virginia group of explorers? And Indian raids is sort of based on Cowboys and Indians we played as kids as well?

heres the correct levi chords. i figured it would be a lot easier to just post a link to my country tabs page than try to get it to post correctly here.
