On this site, as well as a much lesser lyrics website, I found something missing from this song. Does anyone else hear "I had a girl, her name was Eve," at the very beginning of the song, before the "Every time I'd hit her she'd holler police,"? I find this in both the version on Eutaw and the self titled album. Please tell me I'm not crazy. Thank you. |

Yep you're not wrong, you're just suffering from a modicum of self-doubt. That line is missing from the archive transcription. I'd guess that the other websites stole it from here Well spotted. And welcome!
here's a previous discussion
http://oldcrowfans.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1355
and here's the corrected lyric:
I had a gal, her name was Eve (on Eutaw, on OCMS it's Well I had gal and her name was Eve)
Every time I'd hit her she'd holler "Police"
Cook them biscuits, cook 'em brown
Done talkin' I'll tear it around
If you catch another mule kickin' in your stall
Then tear it down
Chorus:
Oh, tear it down (bed, slats and all)
Oh, tear it down (bed, slats and all)
Oh, tear it down (bed, slats and all)
Oh, tear it down (bed, slats and all)
If you catch another mule kickin' in your stall
Man, you gotta tear it down
Mr. Evans on the avenue ain't ashamed
To see that monkey whiffin' that cocaine
Went upstairs to ring the bell
Police in the alley sniffin' cocaine
When you catch another mule kickin' in your stall
Then tear it down
(Chorus)
I had a gal, her name was Eve
Every time I'd hit her she'd holler "Police"
Cook them biscuits, cook 'em brown
Done talkin' I'll tear it around
If you catch another mule kickin' in your stall
Then tear it down
(Chorus) |

Thank you ever so much for vindicating my ears. Also, nice word choice, love the use of the word modicum. |

"the weaving of “Pig Ankle Rag” around the lyrics of “Tear It Down” are delightful touches." - From a 2001 review of Eutaw
I didn't realize that Tear It Down was based on the confluence of the fiddle tune "Pig Ankle Rag" and the Memphis Jug Band's "Tear It Down". I'm curious to know if the Old Crows were the first to do that - my guess is that they are, based on Ketch's syncretic method of building new tunes. Neat! |
