Surprised these guys haven't been mentioned much on these forums. Went to a show of theirs last night and ended up singing and playing in a session with them until 5am, which made its way from cajun to old-time to Irish trad. Amazing musicians and great guys to talk to. Baugus is from NC and has a lot of connections to the "old guard" of old-timey guys like Doc Watson, Tommy Jarrell, and Fred Cockerham. Powell's from Ohio but has roots in Kentucky, and he can play a pretty mean accordion (I guess he has to, his ex-wife is Dewey Balfa's daughter).

Here are some links to their stuff, although it's sort of hard to find decent youtube videos of them together:

Aoife O'Donovan (formerly of Crooked Still) was the opener:

Anyway, if you haven't heard much from them, check them out.

I wish my baby was born.

Baugus lived in the same county as Fred and Tommy and used to hang out at their house, according to the documentary about Tommy posted by the AlanLomaxArchive on youtube.

Baugus was actually saying that they recorded a new version of that song, which will be on Eriksen's new album. Apparently, they spent most of the time they should have been practicing for the recordings writing new verses to that song and fooling around with it. Excited to hear what came of it...

I have seen Riley Baugus quite a bit... often at MerleFest. He is one of those guys that just appears sometimes on stage there with various folks . . . and often in the dance tent or the pickin' meadow. He will just sit there and play with folks from all over... and he is so kind and encouraging I often wonder if the folks that sit in on jams with him know who is is. I have also seen him here in Durham at some free concerts.

Dirk Powell is amazing. He's an excellent fiddle/banjo/accordian/bass player. You can hear is bass playing on some of Tim O'Brien's stuff from a few years back. Also highly recommend his album Time Again. Great old timey stuff.
