First of all, it's really too bad somebody hacked in and messed things up for all of us. There were some pretty good posts here, and useful stuff for players (particularly those of us who are pretty new to OCMS.)
Anyway, I'm hooked, and I love whacking away on the tunes I've learned so far (Wagon Wheel, Tell It to Me.) I need some chords for Trials & Troubles - I've been trying to play an E-A-B thing, and the B doesn't sound quite right when I'm singing.
As the name indicates, I'm a strum-along singer, not a picker (yet), so some simple tabs will do if anybody's got them. While you're at it, chords for Hard To Love would be appreciated too - doesn't sound too complicated, but I've been too hung up learning the other songs to really give it a go.
Thanks. |

Thanks Rasta, that helped! Guess I need to open my eyes when I'm seaching the site - apparently I need to open my ears as well! Looks like I had the chords all wrong. Depending on your voice, E and A works pretty well too - my baby boy likes it anyway (mind you, he's not the most critical of audiences.)
No chords for Hard To Love. Anyone? |

Hi
Its a shame the lyrics aren't here anymore - searchin for em brought me to this site. Thought i'd join n post since im learnin this song. In a nutshell it's:
- brackets denotes two chords in the bar - 2 beats each
G G C G
G C G (A&D)
G C (G&D) G
end
(G&D) G
try just hiting the bass note of the chord (6th for G 5th for A and C , 4th for D) then strumming - it'll sound ok :O). Slide guitar bit is an alternate tuning but you can get it up at the 12 fret. Hope thats helpful. |

Every time i hear this song i think it is an old song, but it's Ketch and Willie with no obvious antecedents. Has anyone noticed any earlier songs which might have influenced or lyric snippets for it? |

Good man yerself, Dan. I actually have this, too!
Interesting track - it sounds like a medley of three different songs. |

Yep, I was just going to say Henry Thomas too.
I think it IS a kind of medley Gumbo - in the 23 songs he recorded he keeps re-using bits of other songs and melodies and the like. The start of Arkansas always reminds me of Fishing Blues and the third part of Bob McKinney is basically Pallet On Your Floor. And other bits overlap too. Love him though!
And I do love Trials and Troubles. Although that's what I'm going through when trying to play it |

There is a bit of the Fishing Blues melody in that first part - Paul Oliver says that song is 'Let Me bring my clothes back home' (and Henry delivers that line beautifully) in his book Songsters and Saints which i'm working through at the moment.
I've heard those lines about
you buy the chicken all i want is the bone
you buy the beer i'll be satisfied with the foam
used in other songs too (Frank Stokes?)
He talks about the third song being a mix of 'the roving gambler' with 'the state of arkansas', but has nothing to say about the middle song, unfortunately.
I've enjoyed listening to Henry Thomas today
(as you probably guessed.) |

Oooooh, guess what book I ordered today... That looks like such an interesting read Stu!
I'm sure I've heard these lines elsewhere too, but can't think of where off the top of my head.
Always a treat listening to Mr. Thomas |

I am finding it a bit dry as a straight read but it is wonderful when you're actually interested in a specific song/artist. I got it after a recommendation on Weeniecampbell.com - did you ever check that place out, missyjay?
I'd say it was right up your alley if i could get away with saying such an ambiguous phrase |

Aye, I won't be reading it cover-to-cover. But it'll be fab to look stuff up!
Yes, I do check out Weenicampbell.com. It's a pretty cool site for lyrics and info on songs and stuff. Have found out a lot by going on there.
Ahahaa, you're allowed to say up your alley... |
