I think there are a couple of mistakes in the lyrics you all have posted for Wagon Wheel.
Pretty sure it's,
"Walkin' DUE south, out of Roanoke", not "Walkin' TO THE south..."
Also,
"Gotta get a move on BEFORE the sun", not "Gotta get a move on, FIT for the sun..."
Anyway, I could be wrong. Sing it however you like, just make sure you're FEELIN' it!

not to picky but, I've never understood why they wrote the lyrics this way
But he's a headed west from the Cumberland Gap
To Johnson City, Tennessee
I live in Cumberland Gap and if you head west from here it would take forever to get to Johnson City. I usally sing west to the Cumberland Gap from Johnson City just to keep things geographicly correct. I know I sound like an idiot but this is what keeps me up at night. |

it sounds like "bid for the sun" to me....
I agree with due south
I've also been confused by the geographical implications of "to johnsons city" |

Back in the day (2002), before the boys were huge, I emailed Jahnig to ask what the lyrics to Wagon Wheel were and he replied the lyrics went like this:
Headin' down South to the land of the pine,
thumbin' my way to North Caroline

[And yes...the relationship between Cumberland Gap and Johnson City in the song is geographically incorrect as Johnson City is East of Cumberland Gap, not West.]
That being said, as we all know lyrics have a way of being rather fluid, changing from performance to performance, so anything is possible as far as what folks have heard. Just take the changes to "Take 'Em Away". That originally had at least several more versus that dealt more with racial issues in the South...now gone. |

| No, I don't have the lost verses, however someone else...I think on this forum...posted about it a year or two ago and I believe wrote some of them out. I'll have to do a little digging to come up with them. Maybe Mollybea (archivist extraordinaire) knows something about it. |

I'm from Johnson City and if you are heading west from the Cumberland Gap, that would be away from Johnson City. JC is in the northeastern part of TN near VA/NC. Cumberland Gap is more towards Kentucky and pretty far west of Johnson City.
But...alas...all I'm doing is digging up old topics. Carry on. |

| does anyone have full guitar chords for Wagon Wheel? the ones posted in the lyrics section only are for the first verse, since the third verse has more lines there should be more chords, and I am not sure which exactly they are. Thanks, Alex. |

I lost my capo on a camping trip last month and only just replaced it. If only I'd thought of these capo-less chords, I'd have saved myself some heartbreak! |

| I dont care exactly where Johnson City is....thats my FAVORITE part of the song, I SCREAM it out every time. At The Ryman show that I saw them at EVERYONE screamed it, it was Awesome. But I can understand why people debate it. Do people in Johnson City "appreciate " being included in the song? Should I visit? |

Many musicians do that. Here in Brazil there was a popular singer called Raul Seixas, in one song he sings about the cross of two important streets here, but they never cross each other actually.  |

| Did anyone ever think maybe that's the reason Ketch (knowing geography the way he does) is NOT riding along with this toked up trucker? For example a different lyric might've read "but he's totally getting himself lost so I'll get off here, thanks anyway...." |
